Nasty crash on the M66 near Bury, Lancs yesterday. My girlfriend was in the car behind the dead driver. All caused by the driver of the Astra deciding to brake test the Daewoo.

Not a nice sight for her to find the Daewoo driver missing his lower jaw and half decapitated after a major roll and flip.

Hope they find the Astra driver.

Before anyone goes off on a "what if" session she was directly behind and the Astra braked for no reason very hard on an empty motorway jut after lanes 2 & 3 merged into one.

Not nice when I'm halfway round the world either.

RIP Daewoo driver.

Police have appealed for the driver. I would imagine he/she is cacking themselves if it was a brake-test, would know exactly what he/she has done.

Had something similar on the M6 last year.
Some tool in a Mondeo tailgating me in the middle lane (I was doing 80ish!) then decides to overtake me, pull right in front and slam the anchors on.
I reacted quickly enough to avoid any contact but it could have been a proper smash as we were still traveling at the NSL.
He then veered off at the next exit.

Still not sure if attempted insurance scam or just psychotic driver.
st me up at the time though.

Cue a lot of assumption and hyperbole, along the lines of "too old to be on the road", "he should've had a greater distance between him and the car in front" and typical PHisms.

Hopefully lessons will be learned from this.

Brake testing is just as wrong as tailgating in the first place, but still, bad times.
No tailgating going on the Astra braked very hard for no reason and the Daewoo didn't hit it.

If you say so. It was a genuine question seeing as it seems to be on the increase. I shall leave you alone now.

I think he meant there are people that will intentionally brake test the person behind them with the intent of causing a bump and developing crippling whiplash all of a sudden for the driver and their 7 occupants.
Not that the Daewoo driver was in any way culpable.

Where do you get that info from? Staged accidents with innocent victims are so 2006. They've moved on several iterations from there. Plus they were never done on the motorway as there are too many questions to answer.

I know what in talking about around insurance matters as well.

Shirley not worth the risk at motorway speeds...

And exactly what she did. She was a nurse and she tried (in vain) to save the guys life instead.

Plus a high speed chase with a kid in the car just after a car has almost wiped you out isn't that good an idea.

Surely his reaction times weren't good enough or he was travelling too close to the car in front? From experience if you're travelling the correct two chevrons behind the car in front, you'll have plenty of time to brake.

Seems a bit weird..

Possibly not.

Two years ago in Rawtenstall, about eight miles away I was stationary in a traffic queue minding my own business when a car in front with three Asian young men in the car suddenly reversed into me at around 15mph. Both myself and my son (built like a brick sthouse) jumped immediately out of the car, the car sped off, wheelspinning round the corner, nearly crashing into passing cars.

Fortunately we noted the number and the police arrested them about an hour later.

The driver had no insurance and had a banning order from two miles aroound Rawtenstall.

Still to this day we don't know what the motive was....If he was going to bang in a "whiplash" claim he would have stopped the car and got out to excange details claiming it was my fault.

Very strange.

That's not at more lethal motorway speed, though.

On a motorway? In Rawtenstall? The M66 ends at Edenfield.

There are occasional attempts now but they're not on the increase as was claimed. They are massively decreased form the mid 2000s.

None of these stages accidents ever occurre at free flowing motorway speeds.

And just to reiterate; I know exactly what is going on in insurance.

Honestly the paranoia on PH is shocking.

Well he didnt hit the Astra so we can rule out that he was driving too close. He just reacted poorly, which has cost him his life.

80 is a decent innings, but what a horrible way to go.

RIP.
