Decided to go on strike! New fuse in place, re-seated the relay & it's merrily clicking away when I connect the otter wires together. scratchchin
Anything else to check?

The fan electrical connectors are relatively exposed and can get corroded.
Always worth a quick check first.

Then try a temporary earth to rule that out.

One of my fans went at the connectors and soon as I'd fixed it, the other one went in the same way as well.

Not meaning to answer a question with a question but has anyone got a wiring diagram for the twin fan set up. It might be of help in tracing issues. My fans are still none operational.

Just bumped to see if anyone has a wiring diagram. Local leccy chap got them going, horn too, now both fans & horn have stopped again. furious

Have a look here, scroll down for downloadable pages, wiring colours and relay layout.

But be warned your car may be different.

Whenever two apparently unrelated electrical things go on strike simultaneously, that always says "fuse" to me. Have a look in your manual to see if they share a fuse, then check that fuse!

Just to add to this that earths are also a issue as well, check this by running a temp earth from the battery (when your in there checking the fuses, you don't want to go in there any more than possible) as a fly lead.

And indicator fuses are useful as well.

I have only had 1 fuse blow in my couple of years of ownership, but as mine glow when they have blown, it was a doodle to find in the dark horrible awkward footwell.

Ok so the new 25 amp fuse had blown. Now, on some diagrams the cooling fans have a 40 amp fuse indicated, assume it is ok to use a 30 or 40 amper. scratchchin

The original SPAL fans (VA10-AP9) drew 7a each ... the later ones (VA10-AP70) draw nearly 17a each.

If you have early fans and are blowing 25amp fuses then I'd be a bit worried...

The AP6's were the same current draw as the AP9s (TVR seemed to use a few similar versions interchangably through the years across all the cars) so if you're popping 25amp fuses with those I'd try unplugging one fan, running that one to see if it blows the fuse, then try the other and see if that blows it as you *MAY* have a duff fan. Sticking in a higher amperage fuse to stop it blowing is not a good idea. biggrin

The standard VA10-AP9 (and the AP6) were pretty limp - they shifted 1460cu/m of air per hour according to the SPAL specs so I'm thinking of fitting VA01-AP70's which shift 2780cu/m per hour and were fitted to the Tuscans ... they draw 17amps each but my ECU now controls the fans via a 40amp relay and fuse which I'd probably upgrade to a 70amp relay (the 40amp relays are a bit borderline for switching a 34 amp load IMO).

The VA10-AP70's (as fitted to Griffs and later Chims) shifted 2460cu/m per hour and draw nearly 17 amps too...

Ahha! Different set of spec sheets I have here show the AP6 as being a later *BIG MOTOR* fan in which case it is interchangeable with the VA10-AP70 used in the later chims and Griffs - in that case they draw 17amps (nearly) each and in that case two would of course pop a 25amp fuse.

I've only been looking because I want to sort the cooling out on mine properly ... mine is an early Chim and has no cowlings on the radiator, so the fans are just pressed up against the radiator which means that only about 60% of the radiator area (that which is actually covered by the fans themselves) is used for actual cooling when in heavy traffic.

Because of this I want to get the cowlings (or make up a set) as per the later TVRs which will space the fans off the radiator matrix and mean that when they're running they're pulling air through the entire area of the radiator matrix and in addition to that I want to add a set of Tuscan fans (which I've found a supplier of at about £130 each rather than £190 each from the usual TVR suppliers).

Adding the cowlings will also *RESTRICT* the airflow at speed which should help bring the running temperature *UP* a little in cold weather and on higher speed runs. (My Chim overcools at motorway speeds and the temperature gauge only gets a needle width off the blue area - checking the ECU logging shows that this weekend the thermostat - a 72 degree unit - wasn't even open on the motorways!)

I'd like to add a pair of VA01-AP90 fans as they shift an incredible amount of air (3170cu/m per hour) but they draw 25amps each which is a hefty current drain when the standard alternator is "only" a 100amp unit and it's not likely to be spunking out 100amps at tickover - so a set of Tuscan VA01-AP70's (at 16.5amps and 2780cu/m per hour) will do 90% of the airflow at 65% of the current drain. biggrin
