Hi all,

Trying to find a chew toy for my 7 month lab puppy that will last more than a day with him.
So far 5 squeaky toys have died, 3 balls, 2 rubber bones and 3 separate "ruff and tuff" rope toys.

He doesn't chew any furniture, or sideboards or anything in the house. Shoe insoles are a different matter though... hehe

So, need some idea's for serious chew toys that will last, he likes to sit and chew, holding it between his front paw's to hold it in place while he destroy's it.

Otherwise I'm giving him a brick to chew on hehe

Have you tried the Kong range ? The black range is suppose to be for the most hardcore of chewers but might not suit with puppy teeth still in

Stag Bars (made from deer antlers) are very good and last ages but they aren't a 'toy' as such. We have the same problem with our dog - we hadn't bought him any toys for ages so picked up a couple on the weekend. The first literally lasted mins (material cover torn off, plastic inner chewed open to get to squeeker) and I'm currently surrounded by the stuffing from the 2nd toy!

My Springer's a good chewer but hasn't made much of an impression on a red Kong despite having had it filled with biscuits once or twice a day for maybe three years now.

Kong range - last for ages.

Ours made mincemeat of stag antler, but the Kong (admittedly bigger than her head biglaugh) made it through.

Kongs are good.

We discovered Orbee Tuff balls a while ago and they're very good. They bounce, float and seem pretty much indestructible thus far. They're not suitable for indoors, as dogs and bouncy balls indoors equals chaos, but they're great for outdoors. My two (Staff and Mastiff) have been attacking them for about 6 months now and there's barely a mark on them.

Will look into the Kong range, he sadly has a sensitive stomach and bowels so lot's of food are off the menu as his arse literally collapses with some foods and treats.

Anything else as he always liked the soft rubber stuff but it doesn't last a week with him.

You can stuff the Kong with whatever food agrees with him, if you feed wet food you can fill it up, stick it in the freezer and it will keep him busy for ages !
We have about three on the go at once..

our boxer loves destroying any toy we give her

like others on here the Kong we stuff with treats still looks in good condition.. the only real "toy" that is still standing is the Kong Wubba. Very hardy material..

This lasts us ages as well http://www.petsathome.com/shop/chicken-filled-bone... (the bit in the middle is gone in a few minutes but the other bone lasts a long time!

stag bars. your lab sounds the same as mine in that she never chewed the house but all the toys you give her are destroyed in seconds. stag bars are the only thing that lasts, and you can get them in pets at home now.

As someone has already said, Kongs are good and tough. Usually last a long time.

Have you found anything, OP?

A range of stag antler, rawhide chews and those tripe-filled bones, along with chew "toys" should limit damage done to one toy?

As an aside, a couple of Wilko's basic range of dog toys are remarkably hard-wearing! They do bone shapes and rings, "chocolate" and "vanilla" flavour, and they last for ruddy ages! Deadly to humans, though - the chewed up ends act like velcro with carpet, and you end up skinning your sole and going AOT. irked

That reminds me. Down our local park a bloke involved in the kids football team takes his Staffie along & lets it do it's thing. I normally see it half under a bush chewing on a broken paving slab it's found somewhere. It seems happy enough hehe

Another vote for Kong and the nylon bones (not sure the brand but orange twirl in the middle)..... however the only soft toys that have lasted more than 2 days in our house have been Tuffy's. There are many with similar names but Tuffy Toys have different gradings of strength and their strongest ones are excellent. Pets @ Home have just started stocking them!

Another good idea is to make dog-lollipops - when the tripe-filled bones are tripe-free, mix some yoghurt and tuna, for example, fill the bone and then freeze. Keeps them occupied for hours!

...although it might do horrible things to your dogs insides... :/ Perhaps not such a good idea!

Thanks for the plug Jamie biggrin

The Tuffy toys are great, and the Mega range is the strongest, but none of these are ideal for chewers. The Zogoflex toys are good too - they come with a one-time replacement guarantee so if your dog does manage to destroy it straight away, you can get a replacement or refund. The Jive, Tux and Hurley are the best designs for chewers.
