Sri Lanka

Hi everyone. I've just booked flights to Sri Lanka and have 10 days there over the Christmas / New Year period. Nothing else is booked yet so I'm looking for some recommendations on the best area to visit/stay.

I thought about doing 5 days beach and 5 days interior but have almost decided to stay in one location now... from previous experience the hassle and time wasted moving around is quite annoying.

Current thinking is to base ourselves (my wife and I) at a beach resort somewhere in Galle district. I want a fairly chilled holiday but also want somewhere that has a good number of restaurants and a bit of activity.

Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated.

I stayed here this summer on business http://thefortress.lk/ and it was excellent. There's not much on the doorstep (apart from the ocean) but getting around was easy and cheap enough.

Thanks for the info. That place looks nice but is a bit more upmarket/expensive than I'm aiming for this trip. I'm think about USD 100-150 price range... really should've mentioned that.

It's a tricky time of year to go unfortunately but if you don't have anything in a while have another look at it as we got some good last minute deals. I know that Colombo isn't so attractive but there were a couple of new hotels and refurbishments about to open when we were there which might mean there's some pressure on prices there at the moment so there should be deals around and it's a lot nicer than it used to be.
