I had the same misfortune. Slough. *shudders*

The judge in the article should have used the new Apple maps. He would have got to a totally different place in total safety.

I was getting to a small village near York a couple of weeks ago,road flooded,couldnt see the depth so i found another route.
Satnav was trying to send me down the flooded road.So guess what? I ignored it!!

These people shouldnt be driving.

Hate the things. Glad I do not have one (some work vehicles are equipped with them). They seem to lower the drivers IQ.

But, that ford water height, could it not be marked someway, say in a colour that says "keep out" over a certain level? Something that is easily discernible at night as well as at day? I think there are many people that would not know how high it is with a glance as they are driving.

I know the ford well - there are clear signs warning that traffic should not use the road.

I had taken my son down to see the ford not long before the incident. No way would any sane person have risked it. The only vehicles crossing were Land Rovers!

Are you implying sane people don't drive Landrovers? As a Landrover driver I have actually detoured to go through floods but horses for courses.

Sane people wouldn't drive a normal small car through there! Of course, Landrover drivers are a special breed

This.

The sat-nav simply sent her along a public road of sorts. she was the one that looked at a swollen river and thought it was perfectly acceptably to drive through in a Toyota Yaris.

I cannot understand how these people are so stupid, there is a ford near me that looks very similar, and it's quite easy to see how much water there is passing through it, they even have large and clear depth markers for you to see, as does the ford in this article.

Sat nav data will only tell you that a ford exists. It won't tell you the depth, mainly because that changes over a year and the data can't deal with that. It's left to the user to use their eyes and brain. As has been said, this ford was well marked (Google Street View shows the water up to the 2 feet mark on the board, how can you not see that in daylight.....and make an informed decision to turn round).

Somebody turned onto a railway line at a level crossing recently after the satnav said take the next right and these people are out on the same roads as us.......

I have used a [Binatone] SatNav once and only once.
To get on to the A1 from my Grans house (in Alwalton) you turn left at the end of her street, follow the road 250yards to the junction and join the A1. The SatNav tried to send me through Peterborough

I use an AA Road Atlas now

Over last couple of years mine has saved me several hours of frustration - by telling me of a major delay on the road and allowing me to find an alternative using very poorly signed roads I don't know. Yes sometimes they get it wrong or the map data is wrong - but it is far easier not to have to worry about which turning you need if the sat-nav is telling you, than trying to read the village name on the finger signs with a local on your tail.
