BMW E53 X5 - Petrol Vs Diesel

I am currently looking at buying an early X5 circa 2001-2003.
The ex-mother-in-law had a 06 3.0d sport which I loved, but my budget does not stretch that far. I noticed it did circa 22 mpg, but she did do alot of short journeys and does not drive in a Manor which is being considerate to fuel consumption even though she never drove fast!! (very much on/off on the pedals).
My question is, what is the real world difference between Petrol and diesel? I know it will be the older diesel Engine but having had conversations with a guy who worked for BMW, he believes there is 1 or 2 mpg real world between the 3.0 petrol and the 3.0 diesel. With cost difference, I cant see much point in the Derv if this is the case? I then look at the parkers spec between the 3.0i and the 4.4 and again there is a 1 mpg difference?
Due to the above, I am struggling to decided what to choose.
Could someone give me any advise? Thanks

The 4.4 will see you with a low/mid-teens average, the 3.0i will get you 21-22, and the 3.0d will get you 27-28, assuming all are driven in a similar fashion. Really, the 4.4 is just too thirsty for regular everyday use.
Whether you think a 5mpg difference between the two 3.0 engines is enough is up to you - I prefer the grunt of the 3.0d, but it costs more for a similarly-aged car, has a much higher potential for expensive repairs, and will only really be worth getting if you're looking at a decent mileage - say 12k+ miles per annum, maybe more.

Not knowing much about BMWs I'd take more of a look at what can go wrong than dwell on MPG, one big bill on a more frugal diesel could wipe out any fuel savings and at the difference of 22 or 23 mpg it wouldn't even take a big bill. Generally older petrol engines are more reliable than the newer higher power diesels.
