Got an E60 M5 two weeks ago and changed the oil last night as it was last changed a year ago but service not required for another 4900 miles.
Appears that the car didn't have the full 9 liters of oil in there as I only filled one bucket which has about 6/7l capacity, the car was cold and not been turned on in two days (already removed sump plug before I remember that I should have warmed car up abit first).

Once the oil came out drip by drip I lowered the car down further and got another 200/300ml out of it I think, removed oil filter etc and got the car level again and started to fill oil up with M car approved Castrol Edge. Only put in 7 litres worth,and read the gauge on the dash and it reads 1.1l on there still, same as what it said before I changed the oil.

Driven the car now and it still reads at 1.1, worried that I've not got enough oil in there, how much oil is left within the pipe work for oil cooler etc, can't be 2 litres worth can it?
If my oil reader gauge was faulty it would throw a fault right? As there are no faults displayed at all for the car.

Waiting for my profile to be approved on M5 Board before I can post on there, thought I'd try here as I've been reading threads since I got the car. Currently got a litre of oil in the boot incase it decides that I haven't got enough!!
Also any idea on how I can reset the oil change so it doesn't read 4900 miles and 10,000 like it usually would do? Can message me the info if it can be done, I'll be changing oil at 5,000 miles anyway but just being picky. Thanks smile

Having a read through here;

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60-m5-e61-m5-tou...

I have driven the car for over 10 minutes and no change, atleast if I do over fill appears that I can change the level without having to dump it through sump plug!

It might be that you have to reset the oil level in the iDrive. I had a few issues with this after an oil and filters service with a BMW dealership here and Ireland. It kept telling me to add 1 litre so I brought it back to them. They drained all the oil to see how much was in there. Turned out there was 10.75L in there when there only should have been 9.1L. They "forgot" to reset it when they emptied the old oil out.

i cant help on this specific one, but i can say, you should probably always have one litre of oil in the boot. My car drinks one litre every 1200-1500 miles, so i always have a litre ready!

Thanks for the replies so far, I didn't reset it, have done now and waiting to see what happens currently says there isn't enough oil in there so I put in another litre which should bring the total to 8, now need to get back home and put in another and I'll be set! Only work a few miles from home so top it up when I get back later today

You have to be stationary with the engine running. Either check it in the idrive or press and hold the button on the indicator stalk when the dis is showing oil level.
