brake flexi pipes, v.silly question.

Hi all.
I've just replaced the front calipers on my chin 500. Having gone to refit the flexi pipes into the caliper they only screw into the caliper about half way. There is recess in the caliper where it looks the flexi pipe should screw right into onto a copper washer? Can someone confirm for me this is the case? I originally removed the calipers a few months ago as part of the tidying project, hence why I can't remember how they should fit.!!
The flexi pipes are the original ones I removed from the car, the calipers are
Dca 086/087 as specified by brake international.
If anyone can tell me why I'm being such a doughnut I would be eternally gratefull!
