Seemed to have just made it home from london tonight, pulled up on driveway and car almost cuts out, I had notice missing about 3,500rpm on the way home. Recently replaced the ignition module (original lucas) with another (bri???? something or other) so thinking may be it is this. Who makes the best now, is it still Lucas? Also heard an arcing sound in the battery region when the rad fan kicked in and out, along with the red ignition light flickering, any ideas what is causing this?

Sounds more like an alternator problem.

I'm guessing you had the lights, heater fan, etc. on at the same time. What voltage was the meter showing?

The arcing sound could have been the fan relays clicking on/off as the voltage was dropping off.

As a first step, have you checked the tension on the belt?

Tension seems ok (just had 6k service) and the alternator is putting out about 14.2v, is that ok?

I had similar symptoms when my battery lead had rubbed through on the gearbox so under load the tilt on the engine shorted and caused the charge light to come on and a misfire.

Just started car, and its hunting badly, almost to the point of cutting out, and that is on idle, no not under load?

Would that have been Britparts ?
I`d look for an original Lucas if one can be found

14.2v measured at the alternator? Or the battery? Have a very good look at the 100A fuse, may not be blown but high resistance because of corroded connections etc could give these symptoms

That was measured on the alternator - tried unplugging the ecu to reset it, but no difference. Could the stepper motor be the culprit? Where is the fuse you refer to?

Under the car, normally on the o/s chassis rail. Its in a plastic housing about 3" long 3/4" wide.
Measure voltage at the battery with full load on - heater, lights, wipers, etc It should be same as at the alternator.

Sorted, some idiot hadn't put the module on tight enough (that would be me then) and it must have worked loose over a few days. Nipped it up and we are up and running.
