Odd comment in mid year review

Am sat with my manager discussing my half year performance. Admittedly a big error caused me to have to go through a time of monitoring, most embarassing, but got through it and was actually 'praised' for how well i'd turned things about.

In my review i got asked if "have you ever looked for another job?"
rather taken aback and slightly confused i replied "no,,, why?"
"ermm. I meant internally, it's not that i want to see you go, i was just wondering" and then proceded to tell me on our system where they are.

Do I need to watch my back/footing?
Annoyingly, I want a copy of my cv from HR to update it, as i've passed exams and i've lost my copy when i moved home. But after this it'll look suspicious but, will i lose anything if i went to hr to ask for a copy?

You have no additional hard copies? Yes, it will look suspicious.

Is it company policy to encourage internal recruitment and staff career development? If so, then you could ask for it as that is what you want to do (and need to update the CV) as suggested by your manager during your review.

Bit woolly, I know.

I reckon your boss is tipping you the wink that there is an internal job with your name on it, so I'd definitely log on and see what is listed there.

If you see an internal job that is worth applying for that's your excuse to contact HR to get your CV sent to you for updating.

Otherwise, how hard would it be to just do a fresh CV?

Of something, certainly. If they are suggesting you look at job X, Y and Z, do it - they know something you don't.

In my experience, it's not that odd a question, I've recently had a interim review and I was asked the same question, along with, Are you happy in your current role? Are there any areas of the business/departments you would be more comfortable in? etc. Every employee gets asked the same questions every 6 months, HR decides them, not sure if your company is the same though.

Companies spend a lot of money recruiting, training and supporting employees, they want to keep hold of their investments and if that means finding a more suitable role for an employee then so be it.

Some could use it against you. I.e if you're at risk of leaving they may try harder to make sure your head isn't turned elsewhere for money / progression. On the other hand if they don't think you're at risk of leaving they may not offer that pay rise / promotion. It's wrong, but it happens.
