Why are tyres so costly?

Seriously. Why are there such massive variations in the prices of tyres from size to size, vehicle to vehicle. Both cars I have would need £1000 for four new tyres. Stupid me you say, no one made you buy them. True. But still, I can't see why tyres have to be so expensive....they're just rubber hoops. I found it cheaper to buy four whole new rims Inc tyres than it cost to buy tyres alone. I have done this twice now on various cars and reckon it's an economical option for many people, with 15 inch rims and tyres from £300, 17 inch from £500, even 20 inch from £800.
Given your username I find it odd that you don't appreciate the benefits of good tyres.
Some tyres are cheap because they're made from poor quality materials, with little or no R&D into their design. They perform badly.
Expensive tyres might be overpriced (although I've no idea, really), but they're the polar opposite from what I said above. Expensive doesn't always mean good, however.

In terms of the variation, having a popular size makes a huge price difference IMO.
If it's fitted to a lot of other cars it's gonna be cheaper than a tyres of roughly similar dimensions that is only used on your car.
The 185/60 R13s on my Fiesta cost more than the 195/50 R15s on my OH's MX5, or did last time I looked, despite being quite a lot smaller.
The former are now very rarely used, the latter are on everything.

I don't think the sizes on our type of cars help the prices! I've never owned a car with a 'normal' size of tyre so I find anything under £100 a bit of a bargain. On the flip side, my cars aren't the extreme 35's by 19 and 20 inches either.
Into prespective my neighbour asked me to recommend him some tyres for his 1.0 Corsa, u gave him the lecture about decent tyres etc.. Then said you'd probably want something mid range as they're expensive.
Anyway, I looked and a Continental Premiumcontact for his car was £35!!! Couldn't belive it.. I almost thought about buying a 1.0 Corsa lol
