We currently have a cat and are looking to get another cat in the form of a Kitten, our curent cat is very friendly but never curls up on our laps, which my missus would really love.
We have friends who have had a brother and sister from kittens and despite treating them exactly the same and handling them lots to get them used to it, the brother loves affection and constantly craves it, curling up on anyone who is seated. While the sister is the complete oposite and never comes up for attention or cuddles.
So I am wondering if there is a way to get the best chance of a really affectionate cat, is it down to Sex or breed? are there any things to look for?
I know there will be a large element of chance and personalities (which we couldnt influence) could make all the difference.

I have one of these on the boat - it's fun to see people do a double-take!

Simpo Two - I had an Able Seaman Simon cat like your one. On one occasion when I had to call out the fire services to my flat as it was filling with smoke from an unknown source, I had to cart the (real life) cat downstairs in his carrier to the street to wait while they searched the flat for the source of the smoke. After it was cleared, the firemen told me they had initially been concerned why I had only taken one of my cats, leaving the other one curled up sleeping
Doesn't help the original question, sorry! I can only add that after spending a fortnight at home on annual leave, my two cats, normally non-lap cats, now won't leave me alone - as soon as I sit down, one of them lands on my knee for cuddles. I think lots of cuddles on their terms might be a possibility?

We have two Ragdoll kittens, they are both lap cats but it's part of their breed nature to be very affectionate. It can actually be a bit much sometimes, like right now I have one sat on my lap and the other stretched out next to me against my leg. Mostly cuddly cats I've ever known.
Might be worth investigating different breeds to see what ones are known for being lap cats. Last two cats were moggies and one was a lap cat but the other would never sit on anyones lap so I guess it's hit and miss with normal moggies.

Boys are usually more dependant and cuddle up more than girls.
Ragdolls are just awesome as above.
A male ragdoll is like a dog in personality, they are a real companion.
Not in my experience, both are either lap cats, or not. Ragdolls are just awesome as above.

It doesn't matter how you bring them up, they either do that, or not.
