Before I start considering a cambelt and kit change, what sort of bill for the supply of good quality parts and work done by an indie would be fair/reasonable? Thanks.

I'm getting mine done on my mk5 golf 1.9tdi on Monday at a VAG indie, quoted £380 inc VAT for cam belt, tensioner, water pump, coolant change, aux drive belt and labour to remove/refit etc etc.

Thanks guys, I'm getting the identical work done on our Skoda as Nick1point9, I now have a good cost indicator.

Always use a VW kit , there was a recall on tensioner as well , i usually charge £70 plus the price of the kit and aux belt.

Indie garage completed the job
Anti freeze renewed
Cambelt kit
Water pump
Aux belt
All in for 286 pounds, they even gave me the use of a loan car for the day!

Now I have a front wheel bearing on the way out, quote is 156 pounds all in, reasonable? Thanks for comment/advise.

Is a grumbling wheel bearing an MOT failure?

If they feel play in the road wheel, yes, it will fail the MOT.

It's not always possible to 'feel' a knackered front bearing in FWD cars unless the driveshaft is removed from the hub.

RFR's for wheel bearings are....excessive play and roughness when rotated, so yes, it will fail.

As Supercharged VR6 says really yes as in if its not detectable play or roughness and in my experience with big bearings i.e FWD or RWD driven hubs (large bearings) play/roughness generally cannot be detected with the wheels hanging free frown unless the bearing is completely shagged and you would have to be pretty ignorant/deaf to drive through that din laugh
