E Type 2+2 - realistic budget?
Discussion
Inevitably a long story, but the short version is I want a 4 seater classic. I've a soft spot for Jags and an E type 2+2 seems to fit the bill. Fortunately, the 2+2 being the least desirable model helps me on the pricing. Nonetheless, there seems to be quite a broad price range.
Is £20k a reasonable sum to buy a 'usable' example, that won't turn into a total money pit? (I will get any car professionally inspected, rather than trust my limited knowledge).
If anyone has seen any decent examples in their travels, I'd welcome any suggestions or links for possible cars.
Many thanks,
David

Thanks Rushmore. I agree that the money poured into a restoration will not be recovered on these, so better to get one already done.
I'm wondering at what price point I need to be at, to find a decent, solid car not in immediate need of a full-on restoration? A middle ground of usable examples between restored and in need of immediate restoration.
There are several on the market which sound good in the write-up (I know, I know, they are trying to sell the cars) around £20-25k. I need to go and have a look at a few to get a feel, but any further guidance or experience gratefully received.

A chap in out local club spent over a year trying to find a decent 2+2 and travelled all over the country. He's quite knowledgeable and certainly knew what he was looking at. The usual story, most he saw were overdescribed rubbish and/or poor quality "restoratioms". He finally found a decent one and paid £25k for it, needing some re-commissioning work.
I would suggest that you will struggle to find a decent car at £20k unless you fall lucky. The previous poster is spot-on, pay more for a better car.
You may find a V12 at this money (if you like them). I know of a very low mileage one that's just sold for £18k needing only minor re-commissioning and a really nice well-sorted car that went for £21k.
Good luck.

Gut feeling:
40k for an ok-ish one.
80 for sought-after (S1, convertible) and/or top restauration.
Shop around. Have a look at 20k,40k and 80k cars. Do your homework. Best talk to someone from a Jaguar vintage club. Often best cars change hands between members and to not appear on the forecourt of dealers.

Well I paid £15 for my '72 tax-exempt 2+2 V12 in early 2011. Have since spent about £3k sorting out a lot of small problems, about £5 to go, including new interior as the old one is worn and the leather is torn badly on one seat, and she'll be up for sale the middle of next year for around £25-28 at a guess. Is £20k a reasonable sum to buy a 'usable' example, that won't turn into a total money pit? She was brought back into the UK from the US about 10 years ago, driven very little, converted to RHD and has just over 70k on the clock.
So you can find one for £20k, but be prepared to spend some money.

The OP hasn't confirmed if he would consider the V12. As i said in a previous post a good V12 can be had for sensible money. She was brought back into the UK from the US about 10 years ago, driven very little, converted to RHD and has just over 70k on the clock.

A really nice one was sold recently. Original rhd, good maintenance history a nice genuine car , it went for £21k.
I was tempted myself but already have too much on my plate.
Obviously the biggest drawback with the V12 is the fuel consumption, but if you could get one at the right price it would be feasible to fit a five speed gearbox and an SU conversion which would improve things immesurably.

ChrisW, MPH,
I would be happy with a V12 - I won't do many miles each year, so fuel consumption is not a major concern. It would probably be the only chance of ever owning anything with a V12 engine!
That information gives me some hope - I need to start looking at cars and finding the well regarded specialists etc.
Any other experiences / possible cars / well regarded specoialists (I spoke to CMC yesterday) gratefully received.
David.

Cossington,
The V12 fhc is an amazing car, I have one in A1 condition.
It was my father in laws late friends, he owned a restoration company
but did little to this as it was ziebarted from new and waxoyled thereafter.
There are wads of invoices and history, MOT's etc.
I don,t use it as I have too many "toys" but if it went I would want to keep
registration number.
I have heritage certificate so original number should be no problem.
Any way we are near Manchester and you are welcome to contact me for a chat ,pics, etc.
E mail or whatever and I will send you contact details.
Cheers. David.

There's one up for auction on Saturday, but it might be worth a look

This one http://www.barons-auctions.com/details.php?ID=5871 sold for £16,600 at Barons yesterday and has had money spent on it, £20k in the past 12 months.
MG511,
That primrose yellow auctioned car looks to be a great buy for someone (a dealer, perhaps), with that amount of recent expenditure.
I feel sorry for the vendor - its a shame they couldn't have had at least a couple of years to enjoy the work done on it.
Sadly, with the balance of costs vs value, it is only real enthusiasts who will be lavishing that much care (£) on cars of this value in the future. Because the costs of repair exceed value we are likely to see more 2+2s falling into serious disrepair, with fewer driveable examples being around.

i like the 2nd car on the list! http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/classic-auction...

It really would not cost £20000 to do the work Barons have listed the primrose yellow car as having done. Although it may have had a lot of bodywork they haven't mentioned for obvious reasons. The E type V12 fhc I have has had all the work listed and more, just not had much bodywork as it is a rare english rust free car. I have photo,s and invoices and they don't add up to 20k. Biggest items were- engine rebuild -£2500, stainless exhaust system- £700, Chrome wire wheels and tyres-£1600, Engine frames-£1200, radiator and all hoses-£600, Brake overhaul-£450, new ignition system-£500.
As long as you pick a car with a good body, [most in this price range are rusted through around the radius arm mounts, sills and footwells], you will be fine as everything else is relatively easy to sort out. Bancroft autos who rebuilt my engine have never had to rebore a v12 block.
Don't just take a magnet to look at a prospective purchase, buy/borrow an endoscope and stick it everywhere !
