Have a look at this advert to encourage people to identify their homes/businesses better, should they require the emergency services...

I've never seen it before, but it's a good idea.....some addresses are very difficult to find...especially at night.

i used to deliver pizzas to keep my degree afloat and only about one in 3 houses have numbers at all. of those. probably again one in 3 can be seen from the road and it is a REAL pain in the arse to figure out who is where sometimes!
in oz there was a govt initative for free reflective numbers to be painted on kerbstones outside a house and that would work wonders over here. it wont happen of course, though the advice is sound.
while YOU might know where your house is, dont expect anyone else to. if you want timely arrival of the emergency services, youd do well to at least make the effort to stick a couple of numbers where they can be seen.
even worse is when people have names not numbers. if you do insist on calling your house 'tall trees' or 'by the hollies' then FFS put up a sign. its not hard and itll pay dividends when theres an intruder in your house and youre hiding, mobile in hand, under your duvet, praying for the arrival of a jam sandwich.

Used to deliver pizzas a few years back myself. I remember that I once got a bollocking from a woman I was delivering to becuase I was late because I couldnt find her house.
The reason? She was in a house with a name instead of a number, down a road that was half a mile long with no streetlamps, down a long driveway and with a house name that was a plate on the SIDE of her house. I live two miles off the road up a track, my house name is shared with at least four other equally remote houses in the area and satnav has one of the few "blackholes" left in the UK, based around my house.
However, I can give a six figure national grid reference and my postcode, yet still plod cannot locate it on their system.
My local rural beat officer can see it from his house, but when we are covered from the town it is a lottery whether they would ever get here.
If it was a medical emergency I think it would be an air ambulance job anyway, in case of fire, break out the burgers as there will be some nice embers by the time a fire engine got here.
Aaah the joys of country living.

Satnav doesn't have blackholes. As long as you are outside with a reasonable view of the sky it works anywhere.

Well get one, then.... Jusrt need a pda based setup with a bluetooth sat receiver on the dash or on your head if you leave the car......
Faster than A-Z and (repeat) you get building numbers.
Mungo is right...we can't start paying for Streetpilot III out of our own pockets...If the police don't provide it, we don't get it.
I must also point out....i've never been issued with an A-Z and have always had to purchase my own...(I've recently bought an A4 size A-Z for my RPG role)...
The ambulance service have SatNav and have had for some time...Not sure about the fire service (as they don't chew the fat much with Bib or Ambulance)..
