From SI561 (2001)
Further requirements for registration plates
11. - (1) No reflex-reflecting material may be applied to any part of a registration plate and the plate must not be treated in such a way that the characters of the registration mark become, or are caused to act as, retroreflective characters.

So it's probably not legal - better be sure it works then

I've also heard it's crap, never tried it though. Bound to be illegal in some way too....

I've seen some cars in central London with what appears to be a layer of clear film on the rear number plate, which does seem to produce a strange coloured reflection from some angles. Doubt if it would defeat any cameras, though. Is that another similar product?

And I guess it would just make it easier for the laser toting scumera operators to tag you of you have extra reflective number plates.......

...although image re-processing is technically illegal, they'd still photo-suite it, and get your number. I could do it really easy, so they can too! now a stealth paint job might be a bit more like it...

The only anti-camera paint that's 100% guaranteed to work is any coloured paint Halfrauds sell, sprayed liberally over the lens of the cameras ! Just a quick reach up as you walk past . . . do it again in 2 weeks time once they've cleaned it . . . apparantly it's very effective.

Hydrofluoric acid is better... no good cleaning it, they'd have to replace the lens... don't get it on your fingers though!

Failing all the above methods go to the tried and tested methods:-
A piece of small black or yellow insulation tape over part of a letter to try and change it to another letter. Just slightly off contact with the actual letter(we are talking mm's)
Bib's cannot prove it was your intention to obscure it "just a piece of packing tape officer, sorry"
Not had a NIP in over 12 months.
Now go through GATSO's just to make them flash, trying to save some poor unfortunate driver money.

If you do get flashed...the police can do part checks of your registration number with the remaining letters...If then found out, you'd be done for the speeding, altering the VRM and possible pervert course of justice..

Better to either buy a radar detector or to adhere to the speed limit....

Hmm, I suppose so. On the other hand one could do the job properly and get a complete new plate.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Aye...thankfully, that's proving more difficult nowadays with the additional documents required to purchase a registration mark from a high street outlet. Obviously, there are ways around this.

I know when I've found cars before with incorect plates, I've gone to town on them. Fixed penalty ticket to start with, information marked on the PNC for that registration mark, reports to the camera ticket office..report to the insurance firm etc etc
I'm sure that makes me a bad guy in the eyes of some of you, but I also have to pay homage to those people (like you Dave) who have the correct registration displayed and get done for speeding.

I thought losing the plates entirely achieved a £30 fine and no points. Plus all the attention from the local police you could ever wish for. If you ever see them; but I guess thats as good a way of finding them as any.

Have seen a heavily modded Evo 7 travelling south from Aberdeen a couple of times now. No licence plates, and no slowing for cameras. Last time I saw him I would estimate over 110, just from the speed he zapped past me, then he went straight past the camera.

Fairly amusing - but I assume he attracts a fair bit of attention from the local police.

That kind of stuff is ok, if you rarely travel the route..however if you're local or its your commuting route, the Bib will mount an operation against you.

In my force area at the moment, we are tracking the riders of motorcycles who have gone through Truvelo (forward facing) cameras at excessive speeds. The pictures of the bikes and the riders clothing is passed round to officers at briefing should they see the machine whilst out on patrol.

Yes the increased formalities involved in getting new plates these days would be a bit tiresome. Pity about that.

One minor detail though sir, if I may:

I do, as you say, have the correct plates displayed and they're kept clean, but I haven't been done for speeding - yet. I would rather not be either, if it's all the same to you, but I have to admit the risk is there.

Best wishes all,
Dave.
