Not so much for me this one but for my wife.

Very briefly she has been offered a job which she is very keen on, it's within her profession but a different branch which operates much differently from what she is used to.

She has received her offer of salary and benefits and they are a little on the disappointing side, is it worth her going back to negotiate or is that sort of thing frowned upon? Although she is hugely talented opportunities to 'sidestep' come along relatively rarely so if she turns it down it could be a good amount of time before another chance crops up.

As it's not myself I'm asking for I'm being a little on the vague side, so apologies for that.

Never settle on first offer! It's worked well for me so far.

That's my thinking.

Any tips?

How far is it off what she wants?

How about asking then for half the difference to start with, but the full amount if she successfully completes her probationary period?

I should've said, obviously this won't work if the % difference is a lot!

I'd say about 20% off.

She impressed greatly during interview and was by far first choice so she is a very strong candidate, unfortunately as I said before the opportunity doesn't come along that often so it's a bit of a 'blink first' scenario.

I would simply approach them and say that 'I am currently on £x, and I would be looking for £y to move'. See what they say.

That said, the overall package (not just the salary) needs to be considered. So things like holidays, commute, company car, health/dental insurance, discounts etc etc.

I have priced myself out of jobs before because the numbers in the equation haven't aligned. For example, I was offered a job 20 minutes drive away for £n, but was also offered an opportunity (which would have been a slightly more interesting, yet more demanding job) in London for £n + £4k. I'm able to commute into London within an hour door to door, but the season ticket would have cost me £6k alone (plus parking)- bare in mind that this is paid after I've paid the taxes/NI on the £4k. I wanted £n + £9k, and they wouldn't go that far. Their loss.

Assuming all things are equal (of course they rarely are), then rule of thumb is to move organisations for a minimum 20% premium in total remuneration package. This compensates for costs associated with moving and risk. Moving internally, I would recommend a minimum of 10% improvement. If she's good and marketable, then this will not be an issue.

I just had the same. Knew they really wanted me, got a decent offer but wanted more. Politely explained I didn't want to waste their time so this is what I'll accept and nothing less (about an extra 15%) and they said yes.

Is there a particulary good/acceptable way of rejecting the first offer yet asking for more?

"Thank you for the offer, I really do appreciate receiving an offer of employment at your company. However, whilst the role is of interest and I am very keen to work for you, I am unable to accept the package on offer. I am looking fo £xxx, and so would require this- meaning that the package to be commensurate with the skills that I bring, which I'm confident were evident at my recent interview"

As the op hasnt mentioned an industry at all then this rather sweeping statement may not be valid.
