Diesel suggestions on a 2k budget

Well the title pretty much says it all, as much as I love my ZT-T (yes somebody out there loves em) with my daily commute increasing and general travels increasing it's time to defect over to the dark side. So here's the not thinly veiled what car challange :

Something with a bit of style to it (although I'm not that bothered by badges)

You'll get a choice of Skoda Octavia TDi Estates for that sort of money. Understated looks and I have nothing but good words to say about mine which does me a 150 mile round commute three days a week plus a bit of long haul stuff when leant to the kids.£2k budget max

you may mock, but the C5 and 406 are both very good cars, superb ride, and the HDI engines are amongst the most dependable common rail engines. The Mondeo is a great car to drive as well.
ETA: the Vauxhall Omega is an underrated car as well.

I had the same dilemma and bought a diesel Rover 25. I test drove 206's but couldnt find one I liked. I guess another Rover may not be in your plans. I think were I to do it again I'd go for something higher geared for motorways. I'm pulling 3k in 5th on the little Rover and the accelerator becomes a volume pedal after a while. On the upside, it's not a common rail, which is a consideration at this price point.

I had one of these for 5 years. Hewn from pure granite, they never go wrong and don't worry about the mileage. I got a lift back from Gatwick a few months ago in one that had one nearly 300k miles.

It's not the oil burner that makes for a lack of style, more the need for something practical.Buying the Octavia for my long journeys is what means I can afford to run an XJS for weekends and fun. May not work for you now but keep the thought in mind to keep you going on dull journeys. To be honest the fact that it isn't the world's best handling cars makes it a bit of fun to hustle through the bendy bits on my way to and from the monotony of the A11.
You just need to get your mind round the situation and make the most of things
