I have an XS and looked at this, I didn't think it warranted the extra £7-8k? From what I recall its better grade of leather, more camera, central armrests and two large sunroofs. The sunroofs were the only thing I felt we would want and £7k for a sunroof just doesn't wash....!
IMHO
Great car though, I have the black piano trim, reversing camera, blackout windows, steps, tow bar etc and find the spec fantastic, I love it.
Cheers

I had a Disco 4 XS in 2010.
I then contacted http://bellautoservices.co.uk and they enabled much of the content like the 4x4 screen, timed climate control (for FBH) and some other goodies that are wired and programmed in the XS but not enabled and for which you pay a lot for in the HSE.

Even bigger saving if you spec up a GS, only minus point is the Satnav/radio, £ 11k saving and bought a satnav/tv and ipod problem solved. In five years will sell for £2k less than a HSE- overall saving £9k. That saving does'nt factor in the grief you get usually get with the Landrover sunroof and satnav.
I've ordered a GS with a bunch of options, Wasn't interested in leather as this is a daily driver and utility vehicle. Apart from Satnav most of the options I wanted on the GS were still options on the XS (active dif' etc). So with the addition of what £5k for the XS over the GS I'd still have a good few grand to go on the options I needed.
I can't help feeling that not having satnav as an option on the GS is a bit daft.
Still TomTom will save the day.

This for me too. The options I wanted I would have had to add to the HSE too. I can live without the cameras and electric seats. JontyR said:
Could you let me know the answers to a few questions?
Which of the 3 diffs can you lock? Is it just the rear diff?
Which was does the engine sit? Is it longitudinal or transverse?
Many thanks
Firstly, you don't lock the diffs on the D4, the car does as part of its traction control systems... Also, the differentials themselves are e-Diffs and don't lock in the traditional manner. Instead they use clutch plates and the ECU can vary the amount of resistance the diff offers.Which of the 3 diffs can you lock? Is it just the rear diff?

The standard vehicle comes with a centre e-Diff but there is the option of a rear e-Diff. The rear e-Diff is a factory fit option only and has to be specified at time of order.
As for the engine... Longitudinal.

Picked up my XS this eve.
Money no object then HSE is nice to have:
Softer leather (i prefer XS leather)
Sunroofs - never used on previous HSE
Keyless go - Wife had hassle with hers (XS still keyless start)
Memory electric seats - would be nice
Arm rests - look good but need to lift to put seat belt in and get in and out, cubby works
Nav looks the same? XS does have DAB
Mood lighting - see disco forum, wiring is all there for it
Metalic paint - I wanted that
Xenons and running lights?
May be a difference in wheels?
Overall XS was £7k cheaper than the HSE after discounts etc so head made the decission. Price was similar for brand new 255 XS 8 speed vs 1yr old 245hp HSE 6 speed
Great cars that do everything.

. Not that sure about specs but it appears you cannot have a satnav with GS spec, is this right? XS looked best of the bunch to me as IMO you didn't appear to get an awful lot more for your money with a HSE.
