What car should I buy - very confused

Hello all,
First time poster and I am looking for a bit of advice on what car I should be buying.
My RX8 was driven into by someone when it was parked in the street and the insurance company has written it off so I am looking for another car. As much as I loved having the RX8, I hated waiting for it to break down. I usually do the drop offs at nursery and school in the mornings which is the worst nightmare for RX8's.
Anyway, as I am a bit older (33) and have 9yearc NCB I can get some pretty nice cars for reasonable insurance. I have noticed that the price gets silly quickly if mods are added and if they are an import (otherwise I would be driving a prelude SiR by now). I only want to spend about £3k, possibly a touch more if the right car comes along.
I have been thinking about BMW 330, Impreza WRX (02 ish), Clio 182 and the type R range. I dont think that I have missed any but am really confused about what to look for, especially as I am not going to pay that much - a bit scared of getting a lemon. Dont really know that much about cars. Car really needs to be able to take the kids to nursery school before I blast it to work.
Any help/advice would be really appreciated - not in a massive rush to buy, probably at some point in the next month.

They tend to be rusting badly at the wings so if the one you're looking at has good wings, check them out thoroughly. I've had some really good new pattern fit wings fitted costing £32+VAT each so its worth fitting new than patching the old ones.
Sports will command a premium but you should still be able to get a nice one for under £3000. SE's come with (i think) sports seats and suspension, though you're more likely to get 'chrome' round the windows, smallish alloys, and beige leather which can date the car.

I currently have two kids, 8 and 2 and we are probably going to have another one next year (thats quite enough methinks).
I dont do any more than 8k per year. Work pays for a lot of my fuel (hence I can get a nice, fast sporty car).
I would probably prefer a manual as I have always driven them and are autos not a much worse on economy and performance?
Im a little twitchy about high mileage cars, got a 127k A6 1.8T and it lasted 6 days, would really want the car to be under 100k. Nobody has mentioned Imprezas, is this because the genrally have been modified a lotor generally ragged to within an inch of their lives (plus not the most economical).
I have to say, Im starting to lean towards a 330.

That would make for a fantastic little adventure, and a nice thread of your own with lots of pics! why limit yourself on distance! Have you compared insurance for a scooby vs bmw? Your posts say your heart is swinging towards the impreza. I am partial to the impreza wagons, even more so for one of these,

Like the look of the wagons and the blue forrester in the picture but the ones in the adverts...nope. Not wedded to Subaru at all, more the Impreza 9went through a stage of it being the car that wanted about 10 years ago but no way I could afford it).
What mpg does a wrx get compared to a 330 in the real world?
I take it people arent too fond of the clio 182s?
I need to remember that this will be my daily driver and Ill not be driving 'enthusiastically' that often.
