Why don't they sell these here !!

And also if this car was sold here it would cost around £40,000 I reckon.. Why is so much cheaper in the states ?

If you have owned it less than 6 months outside the EU you have to pay VAT and import duty.
So basically to get it in without paying VAT or import duty, buy it, store it in the USA for 6 months and then import it.

So I can buy one in the US leave it with a relative - then get it shipped over and UK registered ?

How much would shipping and registering cost ?

if the $/£ hits 2/1 you could get one for about £15000 ...bargain!

I think that you also have to prove (to HMRC) that you have lived in the US for the same 6-month period to avoid some of the duties on import

Owning an American myself, the easy rule of thumb to use is the figure you see in USD is the price you pay in GBP.

I've noticed that quite a bit. You think 'bargain' but once HMRC have reemed you royally it becomes less of a bargain.

$500 - Insurance (estimate)
$22,500 - "As Landed" value
£13,978 - $22,500 Converted to GBP (£1=$1.6097)
£2,796 - VAT @ 20%
£16,773 - Sub Total for calculating Import Duty
£1,677 - Import Duty @ 10%
£18,451 - Cost at Docks
£1,000 - IVA conversion & test (estimate)
£19,451 - On your drive with all the p/work

And all these figures exclude any costs associated with viewing it....

So the reality is that your low cost car, is actually not that cheap after all

Is the US price inclusive of tax? Different states have different rates as I recall.

Edit - also "destination" tax, gas guzzling tax, sales tax, dealer charges etc.

Base price is not $20k either!
