Mk4 golf CL problem! Help?

Not sure I'm posting this in the appropriate place so sorry if I'm not. I have recently bought a mk4 52 plate 1.4s golf and I have a problem with the cigarette lighter! When I push it it heats up but the ring around it does not light up any ideas? I also bought some footwell LEDs which came with instructions to wire to the CL I have followed them and they do not light up could this be an issue with the CL lighting?

I assume you know the ring around the CL doesn't light up unless you have you're lights on.

With regards to teh LEDs double check you have them connected the right way round as they are polarity sensitive.

Yeah I know you need the lights on for that but it doesn't light up even with lights on.
