Surrey plane crash question

I've got vague memories of being taken to the site of a plane crash in surrey??? late 70's early 80s.. 737 size but turbo prop had landed in a fields wheels up and had since been raised into its wheels so they could take it away. (so not in a million pieces).

Anyone here know of it/remember it.

The thread about crashes near to you got me thinking about it.

How many engines?

I can think of a Viscount whioch ran out of fuel and belly landed near Exeter around 1980.

St least 2... but I seem to think 4 could have been on holiday and taken to see it.

That's a picture of the Viscount crash I mentioned at the start. G-ARBY was a series 700 Viscount operated by Alidair which ran out of fuel on a flight from Santander to Exeter.
The crash site is at Ottery St Mary, not far from Exeter Airport.

Handley Page Herald wheels up landing after out of Gatwick is the only one I can find in Surrey around that time - http://www.aaib.gov.uk/publications/formal_reports...

There was an HS748 at Dunsfold but that was a big fire after an overshoot.

That one just dropped back onto the runway just after rotating. Was not really visible from viewing points.

You're not thinking of the HS125 crash, mid 70s? ISTR that one of the first on the scene was the ATC controller from Dunsfold. It was his wifes car that the jet had hit.

I have no recollection of anything like you describe around Surrey in that timeframe.

A Herald did perform an emergency landing near Godlaming after an engine fire. But that was way back in 1958.

You're not thinking of the HS125 crash, mid 70s? ISTR that one of the first on the scene was the ATC controller from Dunsfold. It was his wifes car that the jet had hit.

Yes the HS125, typing error on my part. I was scanning for Surrey and my brain told me to type 748.
