Turning left at a moderate speed I was getting a knocking noise, so after the usual first Cerbera thoughts of "this is going to be expensive" I checked out a few things. Does it happen while braking, no. Is it the exhaust rattling. no. Power steering fluid low? A little bit so top that up.

Checked the wheel nuts and I could hand tighten pretty much all the front wheel nuts! I think that'll be it then...

I haven't had the wheels off in the past 1000 miles or so, it's garaged overnight so can't have been fiddled with, they just seem to have worked loose.

Check your wheel nuts people, it's not something I ever do unless i'm playing about with the wheels, but I think I'll start doing it a bit more often.

Happened to me once years ago....

I had checked the car for a drive from Newcastle to Inverness. Set off the next morning and when I arrived in Inverness started to hear a knocking going round corners. Got worried about it being expensive but when we checked we found 4 from 5 wheel nuts were loose.
Turns out someone had tried to nick me wheels the night before but couldn't get the lock nut off so that was all that held my wheels on for the trip!!!! Glad I never took the scenic route.

If it was a 'groaning' noise, then it could be the oil level. Knocking..try UV joints, bushes etc...

Nope, it was definitely the wheels falling off

I have a similar problem and was gonna take it to the dealer the weekend, will definately look at this first. I'll check me nuts and let you know how I got on (I mean the wheel nuts).

So,

For all of us who will be scurrying round tightening our nuts,

What`s the correct torque setting ??

( should i open a book on the most popular answer, I guess it`s a bit like asking for recomended tyre pressures )

I used the "pretty tight then a little bit more" setting on my wrench
