I'm thinking of downsizing to a ~£20k car, and I'd want to trade in my current car which is worth around £30k.
Would a dealer accept such a transaction? Would I get absolutely shafted on the trade in price?
Any tips?

Just done it myself, from about £17K part ex down to about £8K. They'll do the deal at whatever levels they think they can make money.

We wouldn't look to "shaft" you in any way if you were doing it with us. When taking a car in these circumstances we genuinely would give you exactly what your car was worth to us.

I presume that you would be doing it to release the equity out of your car, not for the love of something further down the scale, so you probably wouldn't do the deal unless it was worth it to you. If you were desperate I would have thought that you would be looking for an out right sale without buying another car, it is these circumstances which some dealers may find easier to take advantage of.

All you can do is go in and see if the offer proposed is what you are looking for.

It's almost impossible to save money by buying a new car - unless you drop to a 20-year old Micra.

If you do change, make sure you sell privately.

You'll probably find your 30k car is valued low to mid 20's! Sell privately if you can.

Is this why there are sometimes cars, same model, year, mileage within 10% yet the private buyer is asking 20% more than the dealers, with no comeback and it stays advertised for a very long time.
