Taking the wife and two kids to NYC for 12 days at the end of March / beginning April 2013. Revisiting NYC mainly as that's where we honeymooned 12 long years ago! Planning to spend 5 days in the city, but then wanted to go somewhere else. Initial thoughts are hire a car, 5 hour drive down to DC. I have only been to DC once and would love to visit again. Smithsonian, white house, pentagon, monuments etc. etc., so current plan is, half holiday in NYC, other half in DC. However, would like suggestions on if there are other better / different things to do within a few hours of NYC.

Nantucket, Cape Cod is very nice. Not sure the weather will be too warm at that point, however. Washington is a great place to visit though. Lots to see, and all conveniently placed on a single road you walk down! hehe

There was a druggie half naked in a bush opposite the 'Cheers' bar, (that is crap and not worth the visit I might add), when we went.

I've been to the Cheers bar, too.

In fairness you get druggies all over the world in every large city, I don't think that would put me off!

Wasn't trying to put anyone off, it was just my enduring memory of Boston.

Well, that and the disappointment of the Cheers bar. All in all, not impressed. Plus they all think they are Irish.

IIRC "Famous Graham" on here moved to Boston (I remember reading the thread about getting a visa etc), might be worth asking him for places to visit in that area?
