I was looking at insurance for the Jaguar (3.6 XJ Sovereign - 220bhp) for when I'm 17 and it's £300/year cheaper than being on Mum's insurance driving a 3 year old 1.3CDTi Corsa - 75bhp.

How do they work out the prices? I always thought the price should reflect the level of risk and surely I have more risk of crashing a car with 220bhp than a little Corsa with only 75bhp.

More young people have crashed corse's than Jags.

Lots of young ones crash Corsa's, no 17year old in the history of the world has owned a Jag XJ 3.6 hehe

Don't complain! Just insure the Jag thumbup

It's probably due to the fact that the majority of "younger" drivers buy Corsa's etc & crash them, hence the premium on that specific car will be higher. I can understand why something like a Jag would be cheaper to insure.

That's covered that one, then..

I think the assumption a lot of insurers make, too, is that the Jag is likely to be your parents' car and that you'll hardly ever be let out in it on your own. Very occasional expected use makes it much less of a risk for them.

I'm extremely happy that this is the way it works out for you! It'll be great when you get that beauty on the road driving

I found something similar with bikes. ok im a coule of time 17 but as a new biker at 39 i bought a Ducati monster, a fair bit more expensive than other bikes i could have bought but insurance around a 2/3 less. the answer being that monsters have a low accident record with new riders compared to most first bikes.

It used to be the same with landrovers when I was 17 they were dirt cheap to insure, but they are too easily stolen and broken for parts so they are expensive these days...

Just go and buy the jag

I found this also, was quite surprised to see my 2.8 Supra was far cheaper to insure daily than my Micra. A mate has a 1.9 Pug 306, again nice and cheap to insure.

That's extremely surprising. I know people on this forum always say that less common cars are cheaper to insure for young drivers, and that's true to the extent that, for example, a 2.0 Volvo 850 is cheaper to insure than a 1.3 Corsa. But in my experience, any premium brand of car, no matter how old the car is or how big the engine is, is extremely expensive to insure. I'm 18 and have got quotes on what feels like every single car in the world (including the same car you have) and the only halfway decent car I could insure for under £2500 was a Mazda 3 sport, which is what I ended up buying.
Out of interest, how much was the quote you got for the jag?

That's astonishingly cheap, I've got 1 years NCB and I'm only paying a few hundred less than that. I'd check all the details of the policy extremely carefully and make sure you've entered everything right. If it all checks out then you're a very lucky guy.

£2850 cheap? Id expect 10 years worth of cover for that. I don't know why people even bother getting a car now at 17 if thats what you have to pay for insurance.

Hand in your card on your way out. And get a reality check while you're out there! That's how things are now.

I've had another look and it would drop to £1930 for a year by the time I'm 18, it would be even lower still if my NCB from the year of riding the motorbike could be used on the policy.

I just have to cross my fingers and hope the prices don't increase by much in the next 3-4 years...

Both sides are this are right hahaha, i hate how the system is but it's just how it is.

Remember driving isn't a right, if you cant afford it, you can't do it simple as that, i just forked out £1200 on my car, broke the bank, but its just how it is.
