Need a simple car to do the following £5k all I have

Ok well my wife had our first child at the start of the month and so seems uncomfortable with me using my bike to commute into London each day now. So bowing to pressuer I have agrred to sell it and buy a car.
Car must be 5k or less
Must do 40mpg (not much I think this day an age)
I would like it to be an estate or MPV type car so I can when needed use it more like a small van. I would like it to have 60k or less on the clock (not sure why just seems ok number of miles)
I intend to keep it forever so depreciation is not an issue.
colour make are not important though reviews of the Chevy Lacetti give mpg of <30 so not a viable choice.
So thats it. Any suggestions for a load lugger that I can also commute in that won't bust the bank.

Re the A4, BMW etc I like them all they seem fine cars but I wonder would a...(takes in breath) a MPV like a Zafira do the small van thing better.
Also my wife worries if I buy a car with 60k+ or older than 5 years it will turn to dust the day I drive it and keeping the mother of my child happy is key at present given child sleeps for 1 hour a day then screams rest of time (she is 3 weeks old)
Any one had a leggy A4 BMW etc or are there any PH'ers who have had to buy an MPV and found them to be an ok car / van compromise
Any way given the passat suggestion I will scan the classifieds as I had not considered that but did like a jetta I hired few years ago was a fine if average car.

For £5k you can buy a VERY good Passat tdi 130 highline, mine does around 50-55 mpg depending on how I drive, which is generally like my arse is on fire. I know it might be slightly older than what you want (production finished in 2005) but they are a good, solid car. I looked in classifieds saw the Passat TDI in blue for sale reminded me of the old Audi RS4 (in that its a car an they came in blue too) so we may have a winner just emailed wife she likes it too.

Seeing as you will be driving in London, a newer diesel will probably explode into a million DPF related pieces within minutes (possibly a slight exaggeration), whilst older diesels will take an age to get to operating temperature and will therefore not be running at full efficiency.
Therefore, a small petrol might be the way to go, which will struggle to get 40mpg in town traffic. So how about a LPG conversion? Get something like a Focus estate (good car by all accounts), fit LPG for about a grand and jobs a good one.
It used to be the case that LPG cars were also congestion charge exempt (though you would need to check if that still holds true as I've not checked recently).

Good luck finding a BMW for less than 5k with less than 60k on the clock.
And an ST220? He wanted mpg!
