Hi, my car is in for is annual service, all looks good apart from they tell me:
"the cracks on the front break disks are 5mm. 5mm is the point at which Porsche recommend you replace the discs"...
is this something i should pay attention to, as the cost would be £1500, or is this just the main dealer trying to rip me off again?...

Hmm - sounds serious - but you really need to post up a pic (or at least see them yourself before just letting an OPC run riot)! You can of course get it done cheaper elsewhere (with either genuine parts at an Indie or "aftermarket" if you don't have a warranty). smile

You have broken your disc replacements? In your computer?

In the US?

Gosh.

If the cracks are not linking the drilled holes and the thickness is OK I should imagine replacement will not have to be too immediate.

I'm sure I was told it was over 7mm?

Mine has some fairly long cracks but passed the recent 111 point inspection.

Tom

Cracking is really common with OEM discs on GT3s. Many of us run them until they are truly knackered, not when OPC says it's time to change as there's usually much more life in them and the odd bit of cracking is no real issue.

So if the cracks are only about 5mm and are not running to the edge of the disks then I would be tempted to leave them as they are unless the've also run thin/worn out as well?? Also, given that it's now winter I would be avoiding putting a new set on, as I don't use mine in winter, and suffer the potential of having them rusted-up by Spring again. Save spending the money until you need to later into the season perhaps next year?

Hope that helps. Post a pic of them if you want further comment from people.

Guys if you had the choice would you buy a car with the CCBs or still stick to steels?

Steels every time if you are tracking it. If you definitely aren't going to do that then whether it had them or not should be pretty far down your selection criteria IMHO.

Thanks DiscoColin. The car would hardley ever be tracked. But as seen here and from my own experiance these cracks in the discs appear at around 4/5k miles so i thought perhaps go for CCBs next time.

with Colin on steels for a track car.. (although the unsprung weight loss gained with ceramics would be a great advantage in "killing the kerbs")...

pccb's for a road car always!

For reference, these are the cracks in my current disks after about 6k road and track miles.

News to me. Ask to see something printed out on Porsche letterhead.

Total 911 did a 3 part story from top to bottom on PCCBs and I guote: "Remember that fine superficial surface cracking form the cross drilled holes is perfectly normal and is a result of the manufacturing process rather than an acquired fault. In this respect, PCCB are quite different from cast iron discs."

Sincerely,

Rockster.
