Well, our Alfa has finally died and therefore looking for a new motor for my missus.
Budget is around £8k
Her main criteria are
1. Small on outside, large on inside. We have one child and are expecting another. So large enough to fit a decent sized pram in the boot. Our driveway is tight to get into and so nothing too big - certainly not bigger than an Alfa 156SW.
2. Toys. (Ipod connectivity and other electric gizmos)
3. Cheap to run (not bothered too much about depreciation as I am buying for her, but looking at a car 3-4 years old)
4. She is not a petrolhead but likes a 'good looking' car. So not bothered about acceleration stats or on limit handling. She would use on motorways occasionally and doesn't want to be stranded in Lane 1 trying to gather speed to overtake. She is used to a Mini Cooper S and the Alfa was a 2.4JTD.
My thinking is either Nissan Note 1.5D or Citroen C3 Picasso 1.6HDi.
Any other wisdom?

Not sure whether you are taking the mickey or not, but we already have a Mini Clubman S. Problem being is the boot is too small to carry even a basic pram and with two kids, we cannot store the pram in the backseats again. Plus the Mini is mine!I also suspect the Fiat 500 will be too small (given a Mini is). Best alternatives so far are the Volvo (not sure about the response from my missus?) and the Jazz.

Civic - they do a 2.2 diesel.
Everyone I know who has one (not really car people) raves about them. I have to admit they seem to do the job of family hatchback pretty well.
Or a golf/Leon.
There are a lot of hatchbacks/estates out there before resorting to a mini people mover but horses for courses etc.

Please dont buy a Jazz. Only driven by people on their way (sooner or later) to the morgue. But slowly.

I had a hire car which was a KIA Soul. It is a small car, but feels big on in the inside and has a large enough boot for a pram. Lots of space in the back seats for the baby seats and the model I had (Soul 2?) had a reasonable amount of kit.
For £8000 you'll find a model with 3-4 years warranty left on it, they don't look too bad either. Plus thanks to its straight edges its easy to park.
Now I'll probably get flamed for suggesting it....

) - I think they're great cars.A mate has one (diesel version) and loves it does 50 to the gallon everywhere has a long warranty and it looks quite funky.
Good shout.
Nissan Notes are another good suggestion (if you can get over the "only wrinkleys drive 'um: thing., the wife loves them and I've been looking into them for some time now. Get an Ntec version and there's not much it's short of.
Motorpoint had loads for £8k ish but you can get them just as cheap from main dealers now as well.
