996 Turbo appetite for oil !!!
Discussion
Guys,
1x week after taking delivery of my Turbo Cab, I took it down to the French Alps for my Summer hols. After a "relatively" sedate drive down there, i decided that now the 1st 1000 miles were covered, it was time to open things up a bit.
I had a couple enthusiastic blats up and down the mountains, only to be greeted by the computer telling me the the oil was down to the bottom indicator on the computer read out, and that more was needed sharpish !!!
After scouring the local fuel stations for anything other than Deisel Oil, I finally found some synthetic, and the car swallowed 2 litres of it.
I rang OPC, and was assured that this was not unusual, as the car does use a fair bit of oil due to the turbos etc.
I just can't believe this is right.....or should i expect to visit the garage for Mobil 1 as often as i do for Premium Unleaded !!

Don't worry, it'll settle down after a few thousand miles.
My mechanic who's the turbo specialist at my local OPC tells me these engines aren’t run-in until they've done 40k! - They use more oil earlier in their life.
Mine has done 36k and uses about 0.5L per 1k miles, but if I drive it hard, it does use more. (Via the turbos seals I guess).

I've done 40K miles now and use 1 litre every 2000 miles. This is approx 50% less than at the 30K mark. Quite normal apparently. Multiple small trips consume more than single big trip. Basically fill to the limit before any decent journey.
Hope your oil concerns did not compromise your enjoyment of the Alps ?

Cyrus,
I think it did a little, Problem is, that i know a lot more about what goes on behind the wheel than what goes on under the hood i'm afraid !!!
Being lucky enough to have owned pretty much brand new cars all of my life, Oil consumption has never been a concern on of my previous cars.
My GT3 hardly uses any after 2-3 very hard track days, so as you can appreciate, comparing that to a Motorway blat down to, and around France, then to have the indicator show up, it knocked my confidence in the car a little.
Other than that it was the perfect car for the trip around the Alps, but i must admit that the driving experience of the Turbo doesn't turn me on anywhere near as much as i thought it would. But that's probably because I'm so smitten with my GT3 i suppose, but that's probably a post for another day ........

Glen - indeed very different feel between a Turbo and a normally aspirated GT3. Turbo is a more of a GT in my opinion - but a brute of a GT well up to the challenge of some chuckable driving and delivers the same fun in the wet or dry. 4x4 makes for useful grip up front and less front end abs kicking in as on the c2 drive trains.
Re oil consumption best to see the Turbo as having oil lined Cylinders (I believe the M5 has similar design parameters and consequent thirst) don't see it as poor engineering. It is a very deliberate decision on the part of Porsche for the 996TT to consume oil and it will lesson.
Hope you don’t let this nag you too much – you have a coveted world class car and like the best things in life a slight imperfection introduces character.
