The car you'd like ... and the approximation you can afford

I was flicking through a recent copy of C&SC this morning that re-ignited a long held desire for one of these:


Alas, I'd struggle to find the money for one these days, but it did put me in mind of one of these:


While the purists would probably find the MX-5/Elan comparison heresy, does it still has some of the chuckable, retro appeal in a package that's plentiful, cheap and affordable to run.

Can anyone else think of cut price alternatives? Mk3 Toyota MR2 for the Lotus Elise, perhaps?

I'd love a 635CSi, I bought an E34 535i for £600. Mechanically similar, and one of two cars I've owned that I really regret letting go of.

I'd love an S1 Elise, so I had 3 MR2s until I bought an S1 Elise (slooooooooooow depreciation curve menat keeping one of the MR2s for 7 years, and another one for 4 years, while I waited for Elise prices to faal to my level).

I wouldn't be too unhappy about that one. Finally had a go in the C63 this year and it's just fantastic. I'd take one over an E90 M3 any day.
