Car Road Tyres - Whty no visible writing?

Being a big follower of motorsport, I've always wondered why all road tyres are so "plain".

Rest assured, I'm no fan of having gash writing plastered all over the shop! As a rider of bikes, all tyres nowadays seem to come with some kind of design that makes them a bit more easy on the eye.


I'm assuming its a distraction thing linked to safety??

I'd imagine, apart from the ugliness of it, that there is no paint in existence with the toughness, flexibility or longevity to survive 15,000-odd miles of road use.

One word covers the whole subject - "kerbing".

No-one wants to see their brand name permanently scuffed and damaged.

I can't see the picture posted, but it's quite easy to have highlighted text. You commonly find it on off-road 4x4 tyres.

As with everything, it costs more to do and will inevitably, darken, dull or break up over time.

this - race tires last for about an hour! it would just be scrubbed off or covered in tyre dust within a few miles; it even wears quickly in le mans. It would be a huge distraction too, as a car goes past with flashing logos.

Nope!!! Just surprised that manufacturers dont do it more for advertising. Its something that would no doubt take on with the chav massive.

This used to be fairly common in the 70s and 80s, especially in America. Goodyear always springs to mind.

What's wrong with raised white letter tyres?



I like mine.

ETA: They haven't worn off or fallen to bits in the nearly 3 years they've benn on the car. Just need the occasional wipe over to clean them up abit.

My old Pirellis were like this, except that the "Pirelli" was in red, not the tyre name. I quite liked it tbh and was still perfectly visible when I took the tyres off after about 20,000 miles.

Hoosier tyres still do it I think I've seen some cheap 4x4 tyres as well.

Your car is an exception, it can pull of it, because it looks awesome

The main reason I imagine most dont do it is because it looks terrible.

Nowt, depending on the vehicle. If the car in your profile pic is the one you're talking about, you're good. If you're talking about three-inch high BF Goodrich letters on a diesel Hyundai, not so good.
