  • Title should be GT cars.*
Considering a few option in the quest to find my perfect car (GT2) and I'm curious to know how easy these things are to sell privately. Particularly the GT3.

Doesn't seem to be a great deal for sale privately and I'm wondering if there's a reason.

Thoughts and experience please.

I did consider selling my 996t privately but I couldn't be bothered with all the tyre kickers and silly offers. I also thought it would probably sell quicker through a recognised marque specialist.

Maybe with a higher value car like a 997 GT3 it would appeal to a different demographic of buyer with less tyre kickers etc.

On the flip side if I was spending 50k on a car I would probably want the security of buying through a dealer with a recognised business.

So did you sell on a SOR basis rather than trade in?

Very difficult to sell privately.
I have sold my GT2 through a dealer, but they have a smaller more specialist type audience as they are predominantly a weekend car.
Bad time of year to sell any high performance cars mind.

I recently sold my C2S to a well known specialist and whilst it may have been a couple of grand down on my asking price had I advertised it on autotrader or such like, car was inspected on Monday and I had the funds in my account when the car was taken away Tuesday.

No hassle, no tyre kickers and completed very quickly.

I've just bought my MK1 GT3 privately, as I always do. I knew the car though and was desperate for that exact one.

If I ever sell, I'll no doubt sell it privately too, again, as I always do.

Good cars sell, although there are a lot of absolute nightmare fannies out there, to sift through. However, when given the option of getting £3k-£4k less to offload it to a dealer, I always think "How long would I have to spend at work to have that money in my hand", hence I have a go at selling myself.

Some people mention that it's easier to buy from a dealer as you have more finance options, but I'm not sure how true this is on older cars. I've always thought you have the option of a standard loan upto £15k or you go much newer to access the OPC deals. I've never really looked into either tbh, as I've always moved up gradually over the years. smile

Well mine has gone through a dealer and extremely happy with the outcome, in fact she goes tomorrow.
Its the first time i've done it mind, all previous have been sold via PH or through word of mouth, most 911's i've owned have been pretty well known so relatively speaking its been a simple exercise.

I have bought 3 cars privately, sold one and still trying to sell the GT3 Mk1, market is very quiet, i have put the car with a dealer on SOR, on the basis of someone wanting to P/X or finance. I think it wont sell now till the spring, unless i want to give it away. As the cash will only earn 3% max in bank it just as well sit in the garage.

Bought the 7RS privately, will full history and then put a 2 year porsche warrenty on it for less than i could buy from a dealer, and most dealers wont give as comphrensive warrenty as Porsche ( as long as you keep the car standard)

Hardly anything seems to sell privately over about 30k as nobody can get finance.

Agreed, have watched so many private sale attempts end up getting part exd and resurfacing at dealers

I think apart from the economy etc, i got sick of out and out tossers either making silly bids or just wasting your time.
Through experience i can tell genuine punters over a fake & funnily enough i've sold 2 of my previous 911's to overseas customers.
SORN is an option provided you do it through a reputable dealer/broker and you have realistic aspirations of the what you want back.

The return on savings is ste though your lucky to get 3%, but for me i don't want 40k sat in the garage not getting used. I'd sooner release a bit of equity and have a 911 in the garage for circa 25k and use it.

Yes, i bought the 7RS on the basis that the Mk1 would sell easily, well thats what i told the wife, they only made 100+ and they are very sort after so wont be diffcult to sell, several months later, she thinks it was a cunning plan just to have two porsches. The trouble is when you have decided to sell, you dont want to use it to add anymore miles or for it to get dirty, roll on the spring......

Good luck with it mate, the GT cars though just tend to have a smaller audience unfortunately

Sale or return is basically using a dealer to sell your car and you pay them a commission. They obviously advertise and have your car on their premises, so you get the benefits of them doing the leg work/advertising for you.
Typical commission would be 8-10% maybe but depends on the dealer.

Yeah they will sell at a "Dealer" price and offer a all the benefits they would offer for their own stock.

Quick sums in my head would say that SOR, in theory, should make the owner(seller) no worse off... ?

Depends on their commission costs and what you want out of the deal mate.
Certain dealers sell cars for more than others but might offer a more comprehensive warranty for example, others may have smaller overheads and fast stock turnaround.
