Hello, picked up my new car on wednesday. Its a 2001 bugeye wrx and I have to say that I think the car is great.

Totally standard car which helps a lot with the insurance etc. Anyway, the car has only done 42k and has been serviced every 7k. The thing that worries me a bit is that the last service was a couple of years ago, previous owner serviced it by miles and not annually.

The car has only done 4k since the last service.  The couple that I bought it from are just retiring and have had the car since new and Im pretty sure they have looked after it (the only blemish in the history was a failed MOT for a windscreen wiper). The rest were all OK with no advisories. My question is, should I put the car through a service and also should I get the cambelt changed? Also, how much do you reckon this would cost? i can afford to tun the car, just dont want big bills just after buying it! Im going to phone the garage in the service book to see what work has been done.

Thanks

If the cambelt is that old and never been done then you should get it done. They have a finite time before they start to dry out, crack and weaken like any other belt. Official service schedule is every 50K miles or 5years, whichever comes first.

I would take the opportunity to do all the fluids e.g. oils (engine, gearbox, diff, power steering), and engine coolant as well. At least that way you know they been done and you can kind of start again.

Owned by an old couple can be a great thing but the car needs to be used as well. Just pootling around the local area as i suspect it has been doing most of it's life doesn't do any car any good.

Go have some fun and stretch the cars legs but just be initially mechanically sympathetic with the car as it might be a shock to the system the first few times that someone is giving it a good spanking.

OP, amazing you picked up yours on Wednesday as so did I...albeit a lowly shopping run 2002 2.0GX Wagon with 43,624 miles from new. Now my local Subaru Garage sell service kits online via ebay at much reduced costs so picked up one of these yesterday. Whilst there we discussed cam belt and tensioner...they confirmed they have only seen three, yes three, belts ever fail. They emphasized that the three cars that had failed belts were all of the used and abused types + there is good reson as to why Subaru suggest 60,000 changes. Off now to pick up set winter tyres and a spare set of wheels.
