I don't like cakes in general, or custard, but I could eat my weight in Portuguese custard tarts.

Not the claggy, overly nutmeggy offerings we're used to the UK; but little orbs of flaky, buttery goodness, with just a hint of chewiness around the caramelised edge.

Was in Lisbon about a month ago, and had several of these. Varied quite a lot between establishments, which obviously meant we needed to try as many as possible.

I too was in Lisbon last month. Thought they we pretty bland really. Prefer a standard UK custard tart.

Now the sardines and the piri chicken.......wow.

Paulo Ferrera was on my plane on the way home. Not that that has anything to do with food.

I have just got back from a week in the Algarve and had to go right in the darkest corners of the wardrobe to find a suit that fits.

Go to the Lisboa café on the Golborne road for the best pastels de nata in London. A mate of mine used to have a flat next door and it made hangovers there so much more pleasurable with a limitless supply of coffee and custard from downstairs!

A few years ago, 4-5 people on my project team and I did an 'eating competition' based on said Portugese tarts.

Eat as many as you can in 60mins. We all bought 20 each.

I did 11. Winner did 19!!!!!!!!!!!
