Floating or Fixed, Shimano SPD cleats?

I've been advised Floating are better for knees and joints. True?

Yup: you've a few degrees of "play" before you're against the stops/spring and/or unclipping. That way, you've a margin for error should your cleats not be perfectly set-up, and some wiggle room incase your feet/knees do shuffle around naturally.

Best I have found for all round 'adjustability' are Speedplay Zero's - not cheap but can be adjusted in just about every direction, and also possible to dial out float altogether so the entire setup is fixed.

EDIT: Your earlier questions re. 1st road bike (Boardman) and now this makes me wonder if you're buying shoes and pedals. If that's the case, then you've no need to purchase cleats separately (which this question implies), as the cleats will come with the pedals. As standard, Shimano pedals come with "floating" cleats

Having a spare set won't do a lot of harm though, they don't last forever.

I've found the Shimano ones last a bit longer than the Look ones though. (No scientific test, however.)
