Ive got a 2002 Hyundai coupe 2.0 SE, and there is a knocking sound coming from what sounds like the top of the n/s. Refilled the oil to see if it was anything to do with a lack of hydraulic fluid for the lifters... But surprise surprise it still carries on.
Its a fast knocking opposed to a tick, which happens at all engine speeds and gears so it's definitely and engine issue.
Any ideas?

If it's coming from the top end and it's a tapping noise as opposed to a knock, it's probably lifters (tappets). If it's a heavier knocking noise coming from the block, it could be rod or main bearings, which would also be accompanied by low oil pressure. If it's more of a fut-fut noise, it could just be a cracked or blowing exhaust manifold. Bottom line is it's impossible to diagnose noises without hearing them first-hand I'm afraid.
Have a look on YouTube for examples of the problems I've described. This should, at least, give you a good idea as to the type of noise you're hearing.
