The trend of pairing dog handlers and traffic cops is to be reintroduced in certain forces;

Car thieves en-masse can get ready to run for these monsters..

It's surprising how many dog handlers in my force look more intimidating than the animal in the van..

Reminds me of the time we were ever slightly pissed up in Guildford high street.

Dog handlers were out mushing the crowd along. Me being the cocky one thought I'd go and sweet talk the dog into submission.

it nearly bit my hand off they are well trained those wee beasties

K9 units (not Dr Who ones) are fantastically effective. Guy I know is a retired dog handler. He says the dog saved him from some very serious assaults. On one occassion he was "retrieving" two suspects hiding in a garden shed. The first came out and was arrested no problem. The second came out swinging a hammer. The dog went for his forearm as trained but caught hold of the back of his hand. The surgeons said the dogs teeth had gone clean through his hand and met! unfortunatley the dog handler was unable to call the dog off with his usual alacrity and the poor suspect was dragged around by his injured hand

I can certainly vouch for the effectiveness of the Police dog. I was working for the Saints/Pompey match when it kicked off last season. I've yet to see anyone take on a German Sheppard, now matter how much verbal they give it. One rather famous dog (now retired) bit 15 hoolligans a few years back at a football match between Pompey and some London club. Forget which one, I'm not really in to football.

Dont agree with Dogs always being used in crowd trouble, going after suspects I bet they are very effective but in a big crowd, say football trouble. Things get very confusing and heated, I was with a mate and his brother at a football game once when it kicked off (Arsenal Vs Southampthon I believe) Sort of got caught in the middle, seperated and my mates brother did the same as me, went to a policeman for help. But of course as it was all kicking off, not sure whose who etc the policeman went for him, hitting his stomach with the batton and warning him to stay back, not blaming him because I'd be so scared in a situation like that with the ardenilin pumping and people going for you. But what I'm saying is if a policeman cant distinguish between a threat and someone innocent in a situation like that then a dog has less chance. Nobody agree?

I'll get me coat

The dogs only do what the handler tells them.
