It was brought to my attention at the beginning of the weekend that the tax on my car expired the day/2 days previous. The reason that I did not know before was because I am living at uni at the moment and the car is registered at my permanent address at home 200+ miles away and that is where the reminders are sent.
Now, before anyone says anything, yes, I should have remembered but it's easy to forget when it is only used once a week.
The problem I have is that my parents are on holiday for a couple of months and only get back on the 12th so I don't have them to buy one and send it up and I also don't have anyone to give me the code to use online.
Where can I go from here?

Please no ridiculing! :P

Cheers,
Bob.

Have you got your V5C?

Can't you go to the post office with insurance details/MOT cert, or will they need the reminder too?

All of that is at home as I just didn't think. What I did last year was just buy it online and got it sent here.

Phone insurance co., they should be able to email a copy of the certificate that you can print out.
You can get a duplicate MOT from any station but you will need either the reference number from the V5C (logbook) OR the certificate number of the current MOT

Excellent, thank you. I didn't know these existed.
I was getting worried as it's just sat on the road ATM and even that's illegal.

It is
Dont try taxing it online or they might send the clampers before they send the disc
Use the PO but you'll need insurance and MOT

You think you've got problems? Try taxing a NI registered car from the midlands. All but impossible, thank god for royal mail special delivery and named driver parents back home idea

SORN it before they start sending the letters, it's easier in the long run. You can declare SORN online with less info than you need to buy tax

Thanks for the help. They don't make these things easy, do they?
I am trying to get a scan of my v5 emailed to me tomorrow so I can get an MOT certificate and get my ins co to send me my docs.
The sooner they sort this out the better, it is needlessly complicated.

DO NOT declare it SORN unless it is genuinely off the road. If parked on road with a newly expired disc the police aren't really going to care. They probably won't bother you if caught driving. I've been stopped with an expired disc. The traffic sergeant who pulled me over didn't even look at it.

Making a false SORN declaration ie leaving the car parked on a public road is an offence in itself and likely to garner more police involvement than a simple expired disc. A SORNd car shows up on PNC whereas a tax disc does not.

If you genuinely are going to keep it off road then declare: otherwise proceed with caution.

Phone DVLA (Speak to a person) and they will do it over the phone if you explain you cant get the V5. I have done it loads of times.

They check MOT with VOSA database and Insurance with MID.

They will send tax disc to home address so you would need to get it posted to you
