Cat B&E licence/lessons/test advice
Discussion
How high? My course was £450 for 2.5 days this was 2 pupils sharing driving to 1 instructor. When you weren't driving you were in the rear of the car observing so always learning.
That cost included the test which when I sat B+E in 2009 was about £110.
As for the actual test the most difficult bit was the manouvres in the test centre before you set off. The company I used got use of the test centre to practice so it was ideal, the surroundings were familiar come test day.
What I also found was that the instructor was good to get you back into the habit of driving the 'correct' way that the DSA examniners want to see you drive, ie using the mirrors a lot!

3 half days training with test on day 3 all inclusive in Leicester is about £650 for B+E
You can tow on a B licence using these 2 simple rules:-
The GVW of the towing vehicle added to the plated MAM of the trailer must not be more than 3500 kgs
The plated MAM of the trailer must not be more than the kerbweight of the towing vehicle
The B+E test
No medical or theory test required
Read a number plate from a certain distance
VIDEO - Show Me Tell Me Questions - usually 5
The next three can be in any order:-
VIDEO - Reversing Exercise - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
VIDEO - Uncouple/couple up - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
One hour road drive - includes the independent drive and is done virtually the same as the basic car test
DISCLAIMER - I have no connection to any companies which may be featured in those videos
This is interesting BUT NOT RECOMMENDED – a B licence towing set up can be presented for the B+E test but L plates must be used for the test. So you can train yourself, go to test by yourself, fit L plates, do the test, then, pass or fail, remove L plates and drive away by yourself.
DSA B+E TEST AND VEHICLE/TRAILER REQUIREMENTS
SUPERVISING A B+E LEARNER
In April 2010 new rules were introduced for those supervising certain learner drivers but they only affected those supervising VOCATIONAL categories such as C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E where the supervising driver had those categories given to them for free when they passed a pre 1997 car test.
They do not affect those with a pre 1997 B+E licence who wish to supervise a B+E learner.
All B licence holders have B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence and can tow an empty or loaded trailer on all roads including motorways.
The usual rules apply when a learner is driving -
The supervising driver must be aged over 21
The supervising driver must have held a B+E licence for at least 3 years
L plates must be fitted to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner

I'm in Birmingham
The car and caravan weight are over 4.5 so I need to do it. Thanks for the links, I'll have a look tomorrow. I can't believe it's so expensive
Hitch up the caravan, get a supervising driver (they do not need to be insured to drive it unless they actually get behind the wheel), stick on L plates and off you go for a practiseThe car and caravan weight are over 4.5 so I need to do it. Not sure when you passed the car test but if you can remember what to do for that then the road drive requires you to look in BOTH mirrors before doing anything - the car test was just the inside mirror in most cases
Reversing - that just needs you to be able to challenge yourself in very tight spots with a another watching (so they can yell STOP)
Learn the questions - they are the same as the car test
Using the video learn to un/hitch correctly
Once competent with that lot you could probably do a whole day with a B+E trainer with the test in the afternoon - that should keep the cost down
