Folks,

Friend of mine at work has a 2004/54 1.7 VX Astra which needs a new headgasket.

She has been quoted approx £700.

This is not at a main dealer, and also includes a fanbelt change.

Seems a lot to me, any ballpark figures?

Cheers,

Sam

Depends how well they do the job - If they do it properly with a skim and valve re-seat and re-seal, new cambelt and tensioners etc then it seems about average.

If they just whip the old one off and bung in a new one then yes, that is expensive but then whipping an old one out and bunging a new one in will give it a life span of about a year if you are lucky.

Sounds about right make sure what is involvde pressure test skim, timing belt, water pump, full head set and what caused the hg to go in the first place.

For pricing i would say 6-8 hrs to replace at 40-50 pounds per hour 300-350 in labour
Parts full head set timing belt water pump 100-150 quid
Pressure test skim around 50-100 quid
Final tax at 20% could be anything up to 50-60 quid

Fair enough, I shall report back, seemed a bit strong to me but I hadn't considered the ancillaries.
