C(63?) Heater - Bizarre

Suffered an egg on face moment tonight. Took the C63 out to some fireworks locally. Upon returning to the car, it had completely misted up.
No problem, I thought, I'll wack on the rear heated window and the "max" button for the front windscreen. All the gubbings behind the dash made their mechanical hum, as if about to redirect airflow to the front screen. Then nothing. No matter what combination of fan settings, a/c, auto, mono buttons I pushed nothing. There was a little "pooft" from the third climate control zone (rear) but nothing up front. It's not until I put my foot down do fans and heaters kick in, it was dangerous to do so without being able to see a thing but I knew it would work, because I noticed the fans didn't come on till I got to a reasonable speed when I left the house but it was no problem because the fogging up was minor at that point.
Why can't I clear the windows without driving away? This is going to be a nightmare in the winter. I even resorted to the handbook, and unless I'm being a complete derp, it merely says "push the max button" or words to that effect. What am I missing?

It does not come on. If I turn it off, the fans do not work either. I have to give the car some welly asap and all of a sudden the fan on and air will come out lovely and toasty and then it behaves for the rest of the journey.
If I remember correctly, "max" overrides all the other settings (auto, mono, speed, heat, a/c etc.) anyway to predetermined optimal ones, so I don't have the option of specifying whether a/c is on or off when using it. However as mentioned above this does not just affect "max" setting, I get no fan (other than the trickle coming out of the fan in the arm-rest pointing towards the rear seats of the car). Absolutely nothing up front.

It was very cold last night when the car was parked in a field waiting for me to return from the fireworks, so could've been that? But I don't think it was quite freezing at that point.
Will the car not blow air until the engine has warmed up, for example? I left the car running, idling, admittedly only for a few minutes, to see whether that made a difference but it didn't.

If its like my e class you have to manually override the max button with the fan speed button which then gives you the full hit.. Im only guessing its to save on battery drain when the car has just started and idling?
Obviously you'll only get warm air once the engine has warmed and most cars suffer from misting when you've got lots of warm bodies getting into a freezing cold car.
Sounds pretty normal to me.

An update. Finally booked it in to local dealer. Car is under extended warranty (bought from official Mercedes dealership) but I'm told wiring is not covered (never had a car under warranty), which if this is the case, I'd have to fork out for. Is this true?
Other discrepancies involved having to pay £15 to go on their insurance policy for my loan car for the day, having not paid it when they took the car in on Saturday to do a diagnostic check (which returned nothing) and gave me a loan car.

Turns out fan motor ist kaput. It is being replaced under (extended) warranty. Service chap, in all his experience (I didn't ask how many years), said he had never seen it happen before. Car is a 58-reg.
Turns out my rear side marker light warning that also appears intermittently on starting the car is down to dodgy bulbs and I should replace them for the issue to go away.
