General etiquette regarding overtaking on dual carriageways is a "yes", but not with a blaze of engine and exhaust notes. Single carriageway road a "no", unless maybe there is a massive tailback and you know that the road goes on for miles.

So this morning coming off of the M25 at J21A to get on to the A405 to pick up the M1 to get to Watford I see a funeral procession. I gave way to the hearse and the two chauffeur driven cars, looked for family following and nothing, just a few commercial vehicles. So I pulled out. They move over to the outside lane (two lanes). Now I'm guessing they are going to go North on the M1 whilst I want South. It's about 1 mile until they turn off, I hang back in lane 1 at 30mph, matching their speed. Car comes flying around behind then sees that I'm trying to be respectful and pulls back behind me, you can tell that they thought about getting in front of me. Whilst keeping an eye on the mirrors it appears absolute bedlam is occurring behind me, it's a busy junction and everyone thinks that it’s just lane one moving slow so they all bundle into lane two and I can see it involving people cutting each other up. Now it's a 50mph road, so I just decide to coast by at about 40mph and slowly people start to follow. Ideally if it was quiet I would have duly stayed behind, however with a busy junction at rush hour I just felt that this was too dangerous to do.

I felt bad, but had to think of the current road conditions, not people's feelings. frown

Anyone had similar?

I just pass by slowly, no blaring music or loud pedal pressed (well its a diesel so doesn't matter) but I think your actions are justified.

When I go I would like a selection of decent metal to go past at full chat

Same here. A convoy of V engines all revving it up is what I'd want.

The father in law gave the mother in law driving lessons years ago, she wasn't a natural driver, the last lesson she had she ran into a hearse outside the village church, I think the deceased had been removed at this point, bless her she never did pass her test.
