What is this?

Probably well known to some of you, but I came across it in a museum and had never heard of the make.

First one can only be American - windshield shape and eccentric headlamp cowls. Second one looks remarkably like a Marendaz Special.

I'm posting on three forums at the same time at the moment, so I've just realised how slow I was...the radiator cap tells you it's a Moon.

That Marendaz was mentioned in an old topic here "Obscure British Manufacturers" back in September.
Apparently Mr Marendaz of Marendaz Special Cars was a very dodgy bloke,got up to all sorts,have a look back.

Wasn't the Marendaz a product of the legendary 'jam factory'? Stirling Moss's mother used to race one IIRC.

I took both photos at the Haynes Museum last week. Around 20 years since I've been there and it is still as interesting if not more so. Oh, and congratualtions on getting them both. I admit I went bounding over when I thought that from afar that I'd espied an SS100!

The radiator on the Marendaz is remarkably like a Bentley - no doubt all part of the maker's liberal views on marketing. "Is it, old boy? D'ye know, I'd never noticed".

This was Marendaz all over,a con man.In 1926 he set up DMK Marendaz building Bentley look a likes.Bentley decided to take no action as he posed no threat.When that company went down the plug hole he set up Marendaz Special Cars in that jam factory in Maidenhead,that too went bust.

Anybody know what the red car below is, been trying for a long time to identify the red car behind the unclothed Lotus 17, taken at Brands Hatch circa 1960.

Gosh, I'd forgotten this one. Pity we can't see all the reg plate.

That bonnet catch has me thinking - was that something done pre-war, or were they more likely to use leather straps? The radiator is so far forward that it detracts aesthetically a little bit, which makes me sure it's a special. It's the sort of look you'ld associate with a Bentley built on a Type-R or Mk VI basis. The Lotus was a very small car, but the "special" still looks relatively tall, so I don't think it's a Riley or Singer.

Lagonda? The radiator would have vertical strakes. The radiator here is just like a 3-litre Bentley in shape, or a Marendaz. The moulding along the top of the body reminds me of a Talbot 105, but it's definitely not one of those.

I'm really annoyed about this one - does anyone know how to transfer the photo and question to the old codgers on The Nostalgia Forum?

Looks like the same model as the Red one in Lowdrag's original picture.

It's all there though and doesn't look in too bad condition - great restoration project

In case anyone didn't bother to chase up the "Autosport" side of the thread concerning the mystery red car at Brands in 1960, there was a lot of info coming from the experts there, identifying the actual car.

The whole thing became convoluted, but I'm pretty sure the upshot was a Lagonda LG45 with special body. The radiator grille had me confused, because it's not the usual Lagonda style, and the change of mudguards to cycle wings made the radiator look more forward than it actually was, if you see what |I mean.

Anyhoo.. congrats to anybody on the original thread who identified it as a Lagonda.
