I've seen other MPV type things which were contracted out with some DVLA signs at the roadside.

They often sit on the south side of tower bridge. It's quite clever really - the detection van is just parked up on the side of the road (where there are often vans parked), you cross the bridge and are greeted by appropiate police and DVLA staff.

Get the dam lot of them I say! If everyone paid their road tax then perhaps the government wouldn't need to resort to other money making schemes to balance the books...

Looks like these will get the vote from most of you P/H's, because it targets people who are dodging a tax that you lot have to pay!

...makes a change... to like a government van parked at the side of the road!

Do these vans check whether the car is taxed, mot'd or both?

Yip seen one of those vans on a bridge over Edinburgh City Bypass.

Thought they should have a couple of traffic units down the road a bit to capture the no tax/mot/insurance/stolen ringer/false name and address/no licence gits on the spot.

The ANPR on the vehicle, runs the VRM through the DVLA database to see if the vehicle is currently taxed or is SORN for example.

Not sure about DVLA vans but when I had my car checked a few weeks ago by BiB (www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=10&h=&t=114920) I heard the guy on the other end of the radio state who the registered keeper was (me) that it was fully taxed and that it was insured. Quite impressed that the police had access to insurance information. Why can't we have all in one insurance/tax disks?

B******s!

WAKE UP!!!! It's a tax. It does nothing to improve our roads. If everybody paid it, nothing would change. The price would still be the same, the roads would still be shite.

Look at it another way: The black economy. Some people pay all of their income tax, some don't. Some people pay, (for example)their builder in cash with no receipt, some don't. If everbody paid everything they owed do you really think things would change?

Or another example: The TV licence. Need I continue?

The person who doesn't pay their road tax is just gambling. Some people get caught and pay the price. Some people get away with it.

If you don't have the balls to do it, don't complain.

Right! I'm ready.... flame away!

Saw an ANPR van outside Rhyl, North Wales today. Never seen so many police cars in one place.

They were chasing cars going into Rhyl, presumably when the ANPR alert was triggered.

I noticed there were patrols further down to road leaving Rhyl too. Do they catch vehicles going both ways? They appear to have two cameras in the back.

BTW, the North Wales vans are much bigger than the one shown. I think they are Vauxhall or Peugeot and are bigger than a Transit.

Next time you have to visit a hospital, the doctor or even get your bins cleaned out I hope you'll thank the diligent people that pay their taxes, whatever form they take.

So you really think the tax system works that "tax X pays for service X, tax Y pays for service Y".

If that is the case, I hope you enjoy your £23.42 per week pension. Oh - what's that you say, you expect more - sorry, what? You don't think that's fair. Well that's what your NI contributions will pay for, so on your basis of course you should be just greatful you get that.

Tell me also, are you also condoning people that commit benifit fraud, after all, surely they are only "gambling" on them getting caught? Of course you won't have an issue with that, and of course won't mind your income tax having to raise to pay for it will you?

*sigh*

They are looking for people who spot the vans and do a U turn.

Even if everybody paid everything that was due to the government they would still piss it against the wall and ask us for more.

You'll be trying to tell me "speed kills" next!

BTW I pay my taxes, all my RFLs, my NI, my council tax and my TV licence.

P.S. there won't be any money left to pay my state pension when I retire so 23 quid would be a bonus.

The ballot box sorts that out (unless of course you believe that it's all a fix )

Inappropiate speed for the conditions that leads to a series of events that results in traumour that exceeds the body's systems kills.

Some people feel that's too long winded apparently.....

Why do they need ANPR vans on the road if the government has this new fangled computerised system that automatically sends out fines to all those not taxed or SORNed?

I'm pretty sure they can't check for a valid MOT, I dont recall any active database for this. However, I think they can check for valid insurance (not sure if they actually do).

A nice story from Down Under. A Canberra police speed camera van got 17 tickets after thieves stole its number plate and sped past every speed camera they could find.

Off the top of my head...if a vehicle is SORN and passes such a DVLA ANPR, then it's in breach of the SORN...

You're correct..

The DVLA vans wont do this, but the police ANPR vans will....both use similar technology to read the numberplates, but that's where it ends..
