Simple question really, which do you prefer to keep the weight off, which is best?

I much prefer to get as much exercise in as I can, but enjoy my food and not worry too much about the odd treat (although my diet isn't too bad and is probably reasonably 'balanced')

I see so many women go to these fit clubs, and record what they eat and how many 'points' they have consumed, only to be disapointed that they have only lost 1 pound (and haven't done any exercise) Shock Horror!!

I would hate to live like that, so which is best and what do you prefer??

Unless you're totally focused on a rather extreme goal - exercise (spelling f*ck) only won't shift weight. Unless you're super fat.

A well informed and selective diet will get things moving. But you run the risk of becoming. 'skinny fat'

Both combined will shift the belly. But it takes a total lifestyle change, and most aren't willing to embrace that change.

And weight watchers annoys me - massively (Cakes? F*cking diet CAKES?! F*ck off)

It depends what you want, I personally view it this way;

100% diet & 100% exercise.

Cutting either is a sure fire way to be very average and lets face it, who wants to be average?

Do both and you don't need an invasive diet and don't need to do invasive amounts of exercise... in fact, do both properly and you soon won't realise you're doing either of them at all. Welcome to my school. wink

And weight watchers = filth. It allows you just enough sugar in your diet to keep your addiction ticking over, so that eventually you have to come back to weight watchers again. Guaranteed franchise.

Completely baffling. In fact do you know what you're talking about?

..Clearly not. But,just for fun, do you mean fat legs and arms, skinny belly? Do you mean visceral fat skinny legs and arms? Oh it's only a risk.

Not without considerable effort and determination and avoidance of internet broscience. smile

I'm enjoying my diet at the minute... No carbs 5.5 days of the weeks and a bucket load of protein and fats... I've dropped 6 lbs in 2 weeks with 2 days total cardio and 8 days weights.

It doesn't feel like a diet as I'm not actually hungry and love meat. If I didn't smoke I guess I'd prefer excercise though.

I did a lot of exercise and was very, very, very fat indeed. That was because I didn't keep an eye on my diet. Now I do a good diet and lots of exercise and have a vastly improved PTW ratio.

Had never thought of it like that but you are completely right. That's exactly how it works.

In my experience, both are essential. Diet more important for losing weight, but exercise more important for things like well-being, cardiovascular health and strength. Even though I'm not a picture of health, doing both did well for me some years ago (and I hope will again).

Need to do both. "Can't outrun a bad diet" is a funny but true line. Most people don't have the time to train if they really eat and drink what they want to eat and have a full time job and a life.

Plus if you do just diet and no exercise, you're going to end up skinny which isn't a good look.

I think that's only true for people who don't make it a high enough priority and it's always (genuinely) baffled me anyone would make that choice.

To the OP, the answer is both. If you eat well and train properly, your "weight" will never be an issue for you.

Fitness is more important to me than BF% so I would say exercise is more important to me, to lose weight you need to get your diet right which is fairly obvious but to be fit you need to exercise.

I know people who want to lose weight but hate exercise, this is a shame because exercise has more benefits than just how you look in the mirror smile

It's. An. Excuse.

Love this little article http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/dont-delay/201...

There are many jobs out there and many ways to style your life, but you only get one body... Tell me which is more important.

Much prefer exercise, it's enjoyable, good for your health and encourages you to eat a healthier diet anyway. Running 3 x 10km per week I can pretty much eat/drink what I like without gaining weight. I do smile at the fad diets the girls in the office take up, when just a bit of exercise would have a much greater effect.

It's all about both, but I'd probably say if you were only going to do either diet or exercise then diet is arguably more important.

I've started to reduce the amount of carbs I eat lately so I can attempt go get ripped... Can't give up booze though. Luckily I'm well ahead of schedule as I don't go anywhere hot and sunny until May next year. biggrin

Yes, I know. I hear it all the time. I find it tedious. They've 100% convinced themselves it's impossible. It's pathetic, really.

You're a bit of a knob, arent you?

1, Unless you're training for Ironman events on a regular basis, most exercise routines burn nowhere near the required calories to burn through fat. A 5 miles run will not burn the KFC you had for lunch... A 5 mile run wont even burn a Mars Bar. So put the sh*tey food away if you're looking to lose weight.

2, a low fat diet will help you lose fat weight, yeah. But it'll also burn through muscle mass at an alarming rate, and first. So fine, have your skinny arms, and shoulders etc, but you'll still have the gut. The point here is that there's a hormonal response to food, and if you get this wrong, it'll show in the long term. Much better nail the diet that minimises muscle loss, and include a full body exercise routine (apologies for stating the obvious)

3, diet and exercise will shift the gut. Are you actually arguing with this?

I've had this argument many a time - friends complaning they 'cant run' or 'just dont have the time' It's horse sh*t. We can all run, we all have the time, unless you're totally focused on getting fatter, in which case yeah, you wont have the time.
