Crap acting as per Pearl Harbour but Some interestingly recreated flying & brutal battle sequences albeit mostly CGI in this. DVD was released this week
I know this isn't the Movie forum but I thought it worth a mention here for those with an interest in ww2 aviation.

Being a Lucas film it got pretty much panned when released but I might indulge myself with the DVD. There is an article on the logistics of making the film in the most recent edition of Flypast magazine.

It really isn't worth the money, it was billed as the tuskegee story, but really was anything but.

Wait till it's in the bargain bucket (about a month away?)

It's not even worth the bandwidth of a dodgy download.

Try the 'Tuskegee Airmen' from about 15 years ago. I thought that was good.

There was a thread on this film a while ago.

We've got enough income not to worry about money so suspecting it was going to be rubbish my wife brought it home out of curiosity.

Got about half way through and lost interest. It's even worse than Fortress was.

I'm not sure why CGI is often so rubbish. It has the potential to be such a powerful tool, but whenever war films are involved they always look like a 12 year old girl who's been in mummy's make-up bag.

The story, dialogue and acting were all awful too.

Why does Lucas get it so wrong so often?

Maybe because CGI is done by arty 20-somethings whose only knowledge of WW2 aerial warfare is from computer games they played as teenagers?

I've been hankering after a decent WW2 aerial combat film for ages, unfortunately this wasn't it. The CGI is too shinny (seems to be a Lucas trait) with visuals that my PC could probably produce, dodgy acting despite a pretty decent cast line-up, worse script and some very improbable dogfights. You get to see a P51 perform a Kubits which should tell you all you need to know about this film. Shame as I think there is definitely potential for good WW2 fighter movie.

Google's letting me down on that one.

I wonder if there has ever been a film which is 100% accurate in terms of aerial sequences?

Sorry mispelt should have read Kulbit. It's a tight stall maneuver (basically a very tight loop-the-loop\flip) which can only be performed by modern supermaneuverable planes. I know the WW2 era planes were very maneuverable too but I highly doubt any of them could have pulled it off as well as dozens of other such sequences in this film.

This, basically. Impossible in an F-14 too but at least that film was quite good. Here's what it actually looks like in real life. The critical thing for this is an awful lot of thrust at the back.

Have to say, didn't think it was that bad. Acting is deliberately cheesey, and having flown in formations of aircraft a few times I didn't think the CGI was massively unconvincing. Having also watched a documentary recently with interviews from the real airmen, the story is surprisingly accurate as well.

I think if you're watching it as deeply as which manoeuvres the aircraft could actually perform, you're probably taking it a little seriously. smile

What is wrong with asking the film makers to only use manoeuvres that the aircraft could perform in period?

The film is (at least in my humble opinion) designed to be a fabulously extravagant account of the tale of these brave airmen, not a documentary.

His bank account would suggest he doesn't Eric, this is the same argument as the weekly Top Gear ones, the majority of people aren't plane or car geeks, they are dumb

The difference being that TG doesn't take an historic and very important story and then st on it in order to make a ton of money. His bank account is not a first measure of getting it right.

You're saying that as if it's a unique situation with Hollywood, it's a business and fat bank accounts most definitely are a measure of success
