Bought a replacement engine from an authorised, accredited salvage yard.

They've given me the chassis number of the car the replacement engine came from but not the engine number itself. The engine number is not visible on the block.

I've been told that Ford will be able to provide me with the engine number from the chassis number - does anyone know if this is correct and if so, how I go about it?

Why would an engine number not be visible?

Are you looking in the wrong place? Likely.

Is the engine number totally obscured by filth? Likely.

Has the engine number area been accidentally damaged making the number illegible? Highly unlikely.

Has the engine number been purposely obscured? Worrying. No legitimate reason for this. On a modern car I would be concerned, you may have big issues on resale if it's noticed at or after sale, if for some reason the DVLA or Police inspect the car it will raise questions.

On a classic car I wouldn't care less, I wouldn't even mess around changing it on the V5 unless it's something special that matching numbers matter on (even then the term matching numbers relates to when it was built not the engine matching the v5 now.)

Engine numbers are not always easy to find even on the blocks themselves. Land Rovers are normally the easiest but everything else can take some getting to.

If you have the chassis number then, depending what car it is, the engine number is the last 7 digits. But like it has been said, you should still be able to find it on the engine, or I would be a little worried.
