Relocating offices & the associated travel expense.

I'm a bit concerned about my impending office move.
Do companies have an obligation to pay any additional travel expense I would incur through having to commute further?

I currently live 5 miles from the office, but have recently found out that I will be re-located to either Nottingham (21 miles difference each-way from current office.) or Northampton(87M But I would move house...)

I've asked HR and I'm waiting to hear back, but I just wanted to check external from my firm as I have heard of people being screwed over and not having addition travel expenses paid. (Through making their current office role redundant and offering another position at a new office etc)

I have checked my employment contract, and it specifically states Clay Cross (My current office.)

Most companies would work on the basis of a normal commute, so a 20-odd mile trip fits into the normal category. If you stay in Nottingham, you'll have to bite the bullet.

If you get moved to Northampton however, then a 160-odd mile round trip is excessive, so they are in effect offering you a new contract, which you can either accept or reject.

If they are a sensible company they will offer assistance with relocation, as that is cheaper than having to recruit new staff, unless this is a veiled attempt to downsize in some way.
